Pete Townshend of The Who wrote "I hope I die before I get old" and went on to tour for 40+ years.
I guess it's an easy and "cool" thing to say in a song lyric, but most people want to live. And those who don't, it's probably not about not staying young and pretty.

Yes, the "it won't happen to me" psychology...
It can linger longer than 25, depending on the circumstances I guess. 
For example smokers who think they won't get cancer or maybe they
do deep down, but they just try to ignore the risk because it's hard to quit.
