Thank you friend!
Just checked it out and he did a pretty good coloring job on Golden's great art.Man,i wish Michael Golden have done the interior art in a Rom issue,it would be mind-blowing.

yeah i love Sal, but i would not have minded it at all seeing Golden having done at least one issue. although if i could have had any one big change on the ROM series as far as art goes it would have been to make sure that steve ditko never would have gotten near that title at any time. like i said in the most recent art i submitted ditko's pencils in the 80s and 90s was just so God awful.

He-he,i know your feelings about Ditko,me on the contrary i'm very fond of that guy so it's hard for me to be harsh on him.If anyone is to blame that's Jim Shooter, since it was his decision to remove Sal from the title. The last part of the series seems rushed to me,the way they concluded the Wraith war and the Galador situation, indicates that they were under editorial pressure to finish the series.

actually, according to the Bill Mantlo: A Life Time in Comics magazine www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOMt7b… Sal left the title over creative differences with Bill. as for ditko, i wouldn't have hated his work had he retired by the early 70s. but seeing his pencils that looked like he was still drawing for books published in the early 60s next to awesome dynamic artists of the 80s like Michael Golden, John and Sal Buscema, Mike Zeck (Secret Wars) and John Byrne just guaranteed that i would hate any of his work between the late 70s to the 90s.

I've read on Shooter's blog that Sal had his plate full and he wanted Ditko to have a job,so he offered Rom.Anyway i think you're a little harsh with Ditko's run, sure it looks a little outdated but there are some great inks there by the likes of P.Graig Russell,Jackson Guice,John Byrne,Brett Breeding and others. It is said that every artist in Marvel wanted to do inks over Ditko it was considered a great honour.

inking and penciling are two different things although at the same time they go hand in hand. my issue on ROM never had anything to do with the inking it was all about ditko's penciling which i don't feel at all i'm being harsh about. ditko's penciling in the 80s compared to most any other marvel artist at the time is like comparing the art work in the original appearance in Super Action Comics #1 and the work on Superman John Byrne was doing in the 80s. here's a good side by side example of Buscema and ditko drawing the same kinda ROM scene. in Sal's work it looks very dynamic, you can almost feel the movement in the action. where as ditko's panels look very static, flat and they lack detail www.romspaceknightart.blogspot…

He probably did not do full pencils on Rom,just lay-outs and the inkers did finishing.Even in his glory days his pencils were light,he liked to add the details during inking like in Spidey and Dr.Strange.Every artist inevitably has a decline even Byrne's art took a downturn in the 90's.
My feel is that the series lost its edge in the end not so much due to the art but on the script choices.

well my friend what ever did it was awful. the minute he stepped into the series which was issue 59 the art work noticeably went downhill. i remember how upset i was as a kid to see the difference at the time i didn't understand why the art work in the series could get worse and not better. i especially hated the way ditko drew ROM's eyes. it just put in two red dots which further added to the "goofish" looking way he drew characters. you take any character or scene dikto drew around the same time other artists did his stuff always comes out looking awful in comparison romspaceknightart.blogspot.com…

I guess we have different views about Ditko, but i really enjoy argue with you it's really refreshing to talk about a character we both love.I so wish one day we see Rom published again.

well that's the thing about art it's a subjective thing different people can get a completely different experience out of looking at the same thing. when i was a kid i never paid attention to the writers and artists of the comic books i was looking at they were all just names to me. but i always liked the art work in ROM it was one of the things that attratced me to my very first ROM issue (22). then ditko started to take over ( i was about 13 years old) and i absolutely hated it i almost stopped buy the book every month. turning each page was an unpleasant experience for me kinda like when you see someone who has a terrible injury like a burn victim. but i'm glad to know we at least can agree on what a great character ROM is and that he deserves to be published again some day even though i don't think it will ever happen.

I wonder what Rom's sales numbers were, sure it was not a top seller title but i bet it sold better than any of present time comics, the industry is pretty much dead nowadays.

Interesting,i didn't know these facts, but if Marvel wanted to go on with the book they could assign a new writer like they did with Micronauts.
Here's what Jim Shooter says on his blog:
"Sales of ROM were never great. For years it hung in there, in the lowest tier, but above the cut-line.
I thought ROM was one of Bill Mantlo’s better series. Bill was generally a writer of last resort for most editors. When no one else was interested, Bill would take the job. Or, editors used him because they knew that he’d be on time, at least, and that meant one fewer deadline crunch a month; or if they were stuck for a script overnight—literally—they knew Bill would deliver. If it came down to words on paper, no matter what, Bill was the no-matter-what. The value of his speed was mitigated by the fact that, often, many changes/corrections were required to bring a script up to publishable quality. Bill was cooperative and willing to make changes/corrections if required—but, sometimes, there wasn’t time. Some editors would defend Bill because he had frequently saved their butts, but I hated to see a sub-standard script slip by.
Another good point about Bill, however, was that he was very free with ideas and created new villains and characters easily and often. That was another thing that endeared him to editors who were sick of stories about the thousandth return of Doctor Octopus or whomever. Anyway, I think Bill liked writing ROM and gave it a special effort. That was a big part of why it lasted so long, I think.
Because of the rights issues, I doubt that Marvel (or anyone) will be publishing a collection of the ROM Spaceknight series soon. Too bad."

i don't put too much stock in anything shooter has to say about anything Mantlo worked on given shooter's antagonistic attitude toward Mantlo.
