Description India ink. I really want this full-viewed cuz I want it to take up your whole screen. The blank white needs to feel enveloping.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They didn't die. They rummaged through their things, looking for stuff to salvage. It was mostly to pass the time and delay recognition of the reality that their home was gone. Even if they found stuff, what could they do with it? They had no place to live, much less keep their things.
Sure, they could walk in and out of the door of their ravaged home. But that was it. All other doors were closed. The door to their broken home might as well have been bolted shut. People were sympathetic only in so much as was convenient. Their doors were still closed.
This is a piece dedicated to people who lost their homes in Katrina. No cities really wanted to take in the refugees. People lived in big camps for months on end. It was really tragic.
Donate to a disaster relief fund. Just pick one and give a couple dollars.
I did this as a demo-piece for a class I was teaching, but it ended up being pretty meaningful to me.
This is really great. One of the things that makes me feel best about my undergraduate school Creighton is that when Katrina hit, we took a bunch of the students from Loyola in. I had an open space in my dorm room (roommate was in the DR doing charity work), so we took one of them in. The curriculum is so consistent between Jesuit colleges that they could mostly pick up right where they left off, and stayed around for a year until the college was ready to open again. I think Loyola (Chicago campus) and Xavier took a bunch too... Just cool to know that my school had a support system like that.
...'course, it's $30k+ a year, which makes for a lotta student loans lol.
That is gorgeous - and heartbreaking. Excellent use of white space, I can see why you wanted it fullviewed.
I love the minimal take you gave this...it pulls off the overall feel of empty hopelessness so well. The use of india ink as the medium pushed the look even further.
Wow. It looks amazing. Everything is so...just right. The use of light and shadow is really amazing in this piece, Nillia. I've been watching your stuff for a while now, but this piece kind of just blows me away. The poses of the girls is pretty perfect--the girl on the right, bending to search, her head up, looking for something else. It all just looks great. And how the items are kind of floating in the water. Wow. It all looks just great!
