I was looking for art EXACTLY like this! I mean Chel and Tulio are a great pair but the 'civilized' society of the time was just NOT ready for them...
On the plus side El-Dorado has magic waters that allow everyone to speak the same language so maybe Chel sweet talked her way around the issues.

Very thoughtful of you! This is how Chel would look like if she had to confirm to the European lifestyle!

This is brilliant. I never would have thought of this!!! But very, very true! She would be treated much the same as Pocahontas was when she married John Rolfe.

...With bigger hats and a higher chance of spreading syphilis! Thanks, I really loved making this.

I love it! I always wondered what would have happened to her; I assumed that she just pretended to belong in society and helped Tulio and Miguel con everyone.

I like the tongue-in-cheek way they presented it in the movie, that was hilarious, but yeah- here it's just squirmingly uncomfortable sometimes!

I thought it as well, but, especially cosidering from what the inspiration was taken, I think it should be like that. Poca wasn't happy either in those pics of her as Rebecca. They somehow cut her from her natural environment, her habits. I'm pretty sure she felt uncomfortable in all this European attire. I think it just wasn't right, especially since I love Native Americans, I share their beliefs in nature spirits. Of course I don't give sacrifieces or do any rituals, but, as much as my friends hesitate to understand it, I'm not a total atheist. And I always felt extremely sorry for those native Americans, who were forced to deny their way of living. I think that Chel wouldn't be all that happy in Spain - just like Poca in England - and this picture reflects that. Of course that's just my interpretation.

Is the picture I referenced the pose from, and what always strikes me about paintings from the 1500s is how dead everyone always looks!
I think later on I might do something more fun with her (and probably Shade-fanart related, lmao) and thanks for the compliment!

I figured you did (we both seem to be such history nerds!), I posted it for comparison sake about the eyes. It's weird too, I felt like I was almost drawing Mulan's eyes <3

Well, when you consider that the native peoples in North America likely crossed over from somewhere in the Eurasian continent (or, at least that's what they teach us here in Canada), I'm not surprised.

As a side note, I'm curious, is that controversial over there? Ever since the Kennewick man trial it's been taught very cautiously, almost like they were presenting evolution or something!

KitakLaw In reply to Nimoue [2010-07-07 20:41:53 +0000 UTC]
No, I don't recall that as being controversial. Then again, I learned this at school many years ago, so that might have something to do with it. I think the Canadian teachers are a bit more practical about the whole deal (i.e. they've gotta come from somewhere, right?).
Not knowing the Kennewick Man trial, I'm assuming you're asking about what I said about the crossing over from Eurasia...right? Or am I off entirely?

Canada just needs to be sued senseless, that'll knock the practicality right out of them!
(Kennewick Man was a VERY old body. A nearby tribe wanted to claim him under NAGPRA, but the associated anthropologists argued that this was a limited opportunity, and there was no way to prove their tribe's ancestors had been in North America at the time the body was alive. Seven years of litigation made both parties a little tender. Plus, one of the anthropologists was a bit quick to announce Kennewick Man was more Japanese than the tribe in question.)

Well...when you consider that both the Japanese and the Native Americans stand a good chance of having originated in the Asian mainland, what do you expect?

I appreciate, as you put it, the more tasteful side of fan art for Chel. And being the person that I am, I have wondered as well what she'd be like in the Western culture of the time since she left with two Westerners. You did a nice job portraying her and like someone said before, I knew who she was immediately from the thumbnail. Nice use of color, and very tasteful choice of pose.

Oh I knew it was her in the thumbnail even! (Which was really confusing at first, actually.) You'd never guess that you had any trouble with it whatsoever.
