Here I am, once again, stepping into experimental territory... with a brush I’d never used before!
In Krita, the large amount of brushes they offer is crazy, to the point it’s hard to find your favorites off the bat - I tend to mostly stick with the standard pencil brushes for sketching, and paint with some textured brushes I got in a bundle called Krita 4 Extras (credit goes to David Revoy for creating it!)
And then, while I was scrolling down the brush list, I felt like giving the “wet paints” category (the one with the purple brush thumbnails) a shot, and well... let’s say I discovered some artists’ secret ingredient for getting varied shapes and textures with ease, smooth blending included! My pick in the collection was the Wet Bristles Rough brush, and I think I never worked with a brush this moist, while still retaining some texture... do I recommend it? Definitely! It's perfect when all you want is to give your thoughts some shape and fluidity.
The weirdest thing? I painted most of this piece on one sitting. Yep, you heard that right. I think I spent a total of 2 hours and a half on a span of 2 days, which is wild to me! I tend to spend much more time to get a similar result with my usual set :’P
In terms of aesthetic, I was feeling inspired by BillyCrawshrimp 's art! He enjoys depicting dystopian/dark fantasy vibes through really detailed and atmospheric pieces! Highly recommend checking his art out! ^^
But why the name “Borealis”, you may ask? Well, the palette I chose to work with reminded me a lot of the aurora borealis phenomenon, and considering all the flowiness and otherworldly energy, the title was actually perfect to it lol. Couldn't be more satisfied with the result, it's pretty different from what I usually paint, but I'm more than glad to mess with a darker, less neon vibe.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy how this mix of textures, colors and shapes, all together in the goopy blobs of an abstract bird, turned out! :]
