Description The current assignment in my inking class is to create an illustration using things other than brushes and pens to apply ink. The illustration is still in the works (I haven't actually started it yet) but I've been having fun messing around. I'm not posting this for lavish praise (though it's always appreciated) but rather to inspire all you india ink junkies out there to try this out too. It's a friggin' BLAST. Not only is it exciting to see what kind of effects you can get using random objects to draw, but it can really loosen you up too, which is great for artist's block.

Things I used on this page, in no particular order:
Q-Tips
White out
A crumpled receipt
A ruling pen
A pencil (the tip, back and sides)
A toothbrush
A paper towel
A penny (my favorite discovery, check out the the rectangles in the left hand corner and the old lady's sweater to see what kind of lines I got)
My fingers

SCHVEET. This is a really creative way to use ink! And like everyone else I'm suddenly itching to get my calligraphy ink out and, I dunno, use my dog's tail to draw with it.
[I wouldn't but it's crazy tempting! ]

aaah, that looks like SO much fun. I should buy inks one day... um, are they expensive?

Sorry for the crazy late reply. India ink isn't expensive at all, a small bottle of Higgins waterproof ink will cost you maybe a dollar or two more than one lowsy Micron pen, and you have a lot more options in terms of application. Not that I'm against Microns, but they do limit you sometimes.

When will the masses learn that india ink is the only way to go. You are ahead of the times, my dear.

And you really make me want to try that now.

Do it! Get that shit all over the place!
Yes, the splatter and the scratchy brush strokes all the way up top are from the toothbrush.
