Description Sorry I was away for sooooo long But I wasn't asleep at the switch either

A cutaway drawing of the rear transmission for the CH-47 Chinook Helicopter. This one is located in the rear pylon between the two engines. Power feeds from the shaft at the left, upwards through a double-reduction planetary gearbox to the drive shaft on top. From their it goes to the rear rotor.

This is an EXTREMELY critical component. Any failure of any part would result in loss of the aircraft O___o!!! The degree of workmanship and sheer amounts of anal-retentiveness towards this component could never be over-emphasised That drive shaft is transmitting over 6,000 Shaft horse-power, and over 4,000 foot lbs. of torque! O____o!!

This drawing was based off from an exploded view drawing in a parts manual

Awesome sketch man! It makes the gearboxes I work on look pretty simple in comparison :-p

Definitely a lot larger than an H-1's gearbox.

And alot more robust. Look how big one rotor on a Chinook is and think of all that weight, torque, and horsepower going through that box >.<

That's for sure, I've seen a Osprey gearbox, that thing's huge! I wonder what a CH-53's looks like. I just had to comment I work at New River MCAS, in Jacksonville, NC, and I work on H-1s but my job is an airframer so I don't worry about trannys.

I have some CAD skills, but I haven't had to use them in a while.

Yeah it's been a while for me too. I'm also trained on SolidWorks, Auto Desk, and Pro-E! Alot of formulae and prompt commands to remember!

one of my co-workers that flew them in the US Army told me that the engineer who designed the flight control system for thew Shithook had to be committed to The Funny Farm when the job was done....poor guy lost his marbles in the process. i can believe it!

Thats pretty crazy. I never knew that. I can kind of understand though. The control system for one of these in INSANE!!!! Four PFCU's for each rotor!!! OUCH!! And all the mixers, push rods, bellcranks, and servoes to synchronize that mess

imagine having to design and develop it from scratch?

Yeah exactly. There's no room for "trial and error" when designing aircraft. No "Oops...THAT didn't work...let's try this now"
