No, pride in your country is emotional, not rational. You shame Spock by using his name in the same context as passion.

Then Spock is actually showing reason, as well as logic. All vulcans have both, as well as emotion when used in a correct sence.

Why is it not a sin for America to be proud, or is this sarcastic?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
ninjawerr In reply to joeisbadass [2014-04-04 21:06:47 +0000 UTC]
It's not a sin for America to be proud, for we have much to be proud of and just how we were made. We are made a free country, which is one nation, under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
It's a play on words for pride is one of the seven deadly sins, and yet for centuries it is been what made America strong.

joeisbadass In reply to ninjawerr [2014-04-04 21:12:07 +0000 UTC]
Isn't the sin of pride simply of arrogance and egoism. I don't think it really matters if you have a reason to be arrogant or not. The arrogance, that sin of pride, is still there. Plus, while America has plenty to be proud of, it also has plenty to be ashamed of. The War in Iraq, the Trail of Tears, slavery, the Vietnam War, and the forced annexation of Hawaii are the main ones.

ninjawerr In reply to joeisbadass [2014-04-04 21:27:17 +0000 UTC]
I wouldn't call the war in Iraq or the voluntary annexation of Hawaii something to be ashamed but everything else I agree.
you my friend are the kind of people that I was hoping to attract this poster, you get its message.

joeisbadass In reply to ninjawerr [2014-04-04 22:19:20 +0000 UTC]
Well, the war in iraq was a mistake. I don't think anyone can really deny that. A few thousand people died because of something our politicians (notice how I'm not just talking about Bush) were flat wrong about. And the annexation of Hawaii involved us forcing the natives into submission against their will. Not treaty. No compromise. Just us taking what we wanted.
Really? Well I feel flattered but can't help but disagree with the premise of what your saying. But I do agree with you that America is a fair and proud nation and I wouldn't say pride is a sin, for ANY NATION. But pride is different from arrogance. I think the sin St. Augustine was referring to was really more arrogance than simple pride

ninjawerr In reply to joeisbadass [2014-04-04 22:29:13 +0000 UTC]
Apparently you don't know the history of Hawaii then,it started with the natives having a monarchy they wanted the right to vote it didn't work then they turned America for help, in the end they just were absorbed into our system, no bloodshed, no violence, nothing.
The only reason why even call it sin is because it was written as one of the seven deadly sins otherwise, I would not call it that, for the off branches of pride which are arrogance and Vanity are devastating while pride itself is not.
In summary I agree with you, More than I do my own deviation. For it was an idea for a de-motivational poster that just hit me one day, and I did it because I was bored.

I should do conductive research to confirm that's the case, 'cause I never heard that (though I was aware Hawaii used to be a tribal monarchy)

For America, is not an adminstation, it's not just Roiling plains and waves of grass and grain, it is an idea... And ideas are immortal.

But this county's cause that in its founding it is sworn to fight for is.
What is this cause?
It's common seance
It's independence
And it's personal liberty
All rolled up into one word.
This county is discrased by those in power, but in time it will once again be something to be proud of, if it doesn't fall first.
