A stallion, red as the setting sun, stood watching the mountains. Steam billowed off his shimmery coat, and clouds of white burst into existence with every breath.

He turned to look at me, his fiery eyes penetrated my soul. What he saw, I don’t know. I hoped maybe it was something he wanted to see. He flicked his head, and reared up in front of me. I slipped in the snow and fell. The stallion slammed his split hooves on the ground at my feet before climbing into the sky once more. Snow crystals sprang into the air, and threatened to blow away in the breeze.

I felt something inside me, as if I could suddenly feel him. His anger, and desperation for freedom. It reminded me, of me, and more than anything I wanted him to understand I knew what it was like to feel those pains.

I reached out, and he snapped at my fingertips. I was either to stupid, or to stubborn but I wouldn’t be frightened to easily. I kept my arm outstretched, waiting for him.

“Look at me.” I said. The stallion’s ears flickered forward. He pinched his lips tightly, but didn’t snap again. He steadied himself, then lowered his head, bringing himself eye level with me. I put a hand at the base of his magnificent horn and whispered. “Look at me.”

His eyes locked with mine, and time ceased to exist. I don’t know how long he watched my soul, nor how long I watched his soul, dancing with trembling flames in his eyes. There was so much more to him, then a red coat, and hot-tempered mind.

I could see the longing for friendship, and understanding.

He lifted his head, pulling me to my feet. I ran my hand over his soft fur, to the top of his neck behind his ears, and smiled. “Thank you.”

He shook out his mane in response and he turned to continue surveying the land. For a while longer we stood side by side watching the mountains, and falling snow before it was time to head back to the stable. When we did, the stallion came willingly, he walked beside me as if finding the same comfort in me, as I was beginning to find in him. Maybe we were starting to understand each other.
