Toa may seem like a hardworking student at first glance, and she is. She believes that there's no need to put up a front towards others, and she does and says what she wants. To her, there's no good in hiding or dodging, what matters the most is triumph. No matter what's in her way, she'll break it and move on. As such, she doesn't think too much before taking an action, since she's confident that she can take on anything that comes her way, which sometimes leads to undesirable consequences. She often meddles in other people's affairs, but that usually brings about disaster instead of helping at all. Her competitive streak never breaks up, even when she knows she can't get any better than she is now, she still tries to attain it, fueled by her jealousy of others' success. Despite all that, she's surprisingly reasonable if you tell her what you want, just be prepared for some curses if she doesn't like what she hears.
History:
Born to a Chinese father, the only son of a rich family, and a Japanese mother, who was studying law in a local university, Toa's first few years were relatively uneventful, despite her father's family disapproving of the marriage. In a fit of anger, her father packed up and left for another town in China, wife and child in tow, where he found a managerial position in a small company. As Toa grew up, inspired by the many sports videos her father had, she tried various sports, and eventually joined the track club. She soon watched some of the older students participating in a javelin throwing competition, which ended in the win of a senior, only a year older than Toa. Inspired, she decided to pick up the sport and learn from the senior, hoping to one day reach her level.
However, that was also the time when her parents' relationship was getting strained. With their daughter growing up so quickly, their money depleted fast. Since Toa was already capable of taking care of herself, her mother found a job in a law firm to help support the family. She never saw her parents very much after that, since they were both busy with work, but she still loved them, working hard at both school and sports to take a load off their shoulders. When she was on her last year in elementary school, she had already won various awards for her school, but there was one thing that she felt wasn't right - when she entered something with her senior, she'd always be second to her. Toa knew, unlike a talentless person like her, who spent all her time practicing, her senior, who was simply talented, would never lose to her, and from that arose a grudge. She was unsatisfied with being unable to surpass her. Soon, she became noticeably more hostile to everyone in the club, seeing them as her enemies. But months passed, and she still couldn't get a better score than her senior, in spite of how much she trained.
What finally toppled the balance was her parents' relationship. Her mother's company offered her a post with much better pay, but she had to move back to her home country, Japan. Her father refused, of course, since he had a family and business here. Since they both had different goals and none of the passion they had when they were younger, they decided that separating would be the best option, and Toa would go with her mother. Toa thought it was on her, that her failures have caused this. She convinced herself that if she managed to win this year’s competition, which would also be her last in elementary school, her parents would be happy again and remain together. She was determined to win over her senior by any method - if she couldn't beat her today, she would never beat her again. That's when a devious idea came to her. On the day, she poured a cup of tea, mixed some laxatives inside and gave it to her senior, in pretense of good will and sportsmanship. Her senior, despite Toa's recent aggressiveness, still trusted her, and willingly took the tea she gave. Of course, she couldn't make it to the field. Alas, her plan failed and even though her parents were elated, they also said that their marriage was over, and refused any attempt by Toa to get them back together. After the incident, the committee chalked it up to food poisoning. Toa instantly felt guilty about what she did, and resolved to never do these backhanded things again. Without checking whether her senior knew about it, she quickly left the school as her mother prepared to move to Japan.
During her initial move, she still participated in competitions, but with her usual aggressive demeanor, she was disliked by most of the people involved, however good her scores were. However, this ended in her last year of middle school, when she shoved someone and they pulled her with them into a ditch, where she broke her leg in the process. There was no way she could continue like this, it was at this point when she finally thought of her future. She wasn’t particularly good at anything else, and most of all, she couldn’t fathom a life without tossing long poles with sharp parts on them, but depending on her wound, she could end up never going back.
During that slump, she ended up playing online mahjong. She didn't know anything about it at first, and simply picked it up out of curiosity, but she learned fast and became known for her aggressive playstyle. That filled the void in her life, and eventually became the center of it. She spent all her spare time playing, even going to parlors before her mother quickly found out about it. Since Toa went somewhere with no rates, it wasn’t technically gambling, but that’s not how her mother saw it. To her, everything related to gambling was bad, and her daughter was turning bad. From that day on, Toa was more closely monitored by her mother, but as long as she stayed home, her mother wouldn’t complain, so she delved into online mahjong again. Eventually, she had lesser time to spend on schoolwork, and the only time she actually studied was in school, since going home means mahjong. She knew this wasn’t a particularly good idea, but she’s so deep into the marsh that she couldn’t figure a way to get out of it. Frustrated at her weak will, every day passes by her never finding the will to get her shit together. If she just slept and never woke up, would she be free from this? She hoped so.
tl;dr: Kid gets into javelin throwing, always getting silver at competitions, jealous of her senpai’s skills. Her parents want to break up but she thinks that if she wins over senpai her parents wouldn't divorce. So, like any normal kid would do, she drops laxatives into senpai’s drink and wins, but her parents divorce anyway. She then moves to Japan, breaks her leg in another competition, and is now a mahjong addict with no way out.
