Description

Name: Hisakawa Kei
Age: 197
Birthday: 18th August
Gender: male
Species: Kawauso (an exceptionally long-living river otter that turned into yokai)
Height / Weight: 176 cm (5'9) / 59 kg (130 lb)
Occupation: barista

Powers:
  • Shapeshifting: the ability to take the form of anything seen before.
  • Possession: forcibly take over the consciousness of a body.

Personality:
  • Self-centered, but not necessarily egotistic: while he does prioritise himself over others, he does not think that the world revolves around him.
  • Territorial: he is very protective of his belongings and territory (in this case his room).
  • Nonchalant: he cares little for what is going on all around him, unless it directly involves him.
  • Efficient: just another word for lazy, really; whenever faced with problems, he takes the easiest and quickest solution, not minding about the consequences it might have in the future.
  • Sensitive: since he does care about himself more than others, whenever insulted or degraded, even jokingly, he takes it very seriously.
  • Quick-witted: in situations involving battles, he is able to respond adequately due to his quick thinking. However, nowadays, he only ever uses his wits for sarcasm.
  • Suspicious: the one thing he doesn't believe in is pure, sincere kindness. He believes that there is always an ulterior motive behind every act of kindness, and thus, he is hesitant to accept others's kindness.

Room: a standard, rather empty 8-tatami room with a futon that is almost always unkempt, simply because he doesn't care enough to make his bed.

Reason for stay: he was homeless before finding out about the inn, living his life while taking the form of various animals. He thought life was fine, until he learned that he could live a better life if he lived in the inn; mostly because he wouldn't have to spend so much time and energy to hunt for food.

Biography:

It was strange how long he lived; he watched his mother die. He watched his siblings die. He watched his children die—heck, he even watched his grandchildren and their children die. He was only a river otter, but he knew how odd it was that his death didn't come. It got even stranger when, one day, his prided greyish-brown coat gradually turned red-and-white, and strange markings, nigh luminescent, started appearing on his body one by one. They didn't stop appearing until his hundredth year.

It was the hundredth winter of his life when somehow, all the puzzle pieces fitted together—why he didn't die, why he knew he was supposed to die back then, long, long ago, why his fur changed colours, and why those almost-runic markings appeared. He didn't know how or why, but he had turned into a completely different lifeform; no longer a mere river otter, he turned into a yokai. He spent his life roaming around, putting his newfound powers to use as he took the forms of different animals and even inanimate objects. It was during one of his acts of mischief that he discovered his love for sake; he broke into a house in the outskirts of a village and, out of curiosity, had a taste of the oddly alluring liquid in a cup.

Likes:
  • Sake
  • The way how freshly fallen snow sinks after being stepped on
  • Quiet nights when he can nestle in his bed
  • Splashing around in water
  • Vivid colours (though he doesn't like them on articles of clothing)

Dislikes:
  • His belongings being touched without permission
  • His personal space invaded
  • Being criticised
  • Unnecessary attention
  • Small talk (this is why he chose to work as a barista whose job is only to make coffee)

Trivia:
  • The name Hisakawa (久川) roughly translates into river of eternity, and Kei (恵) translates into blessing

  • The markings on his otter-form body translates into red moles on his human-form body.

  • He can shapeshift into other yokai, but he can't obtain their powers.

  • He gave himself the name Hisakawa Kei after stealing a baby-name book from a house and browsing through it.

  • During one of his homeless days wandering around and shapeshifting into other animals, he shifted into a goat and learned that grass tasted better than he thought it would. He prefers fish, but he would eat grass again.

  • Unlike some other yokai who value Japanese traditions, Kei considers himself "modernised", mostly because technology is convenient and he's lazy.
