Description I was lucky enough to get some shots of this wild Brown Hare feeding one evening in the Scottish Borders region. It was very timid so it was a real treat to be able to watch it relatively close up. I love the stare of the eye in this shot, I think it looks like a target.

Brown Hare - Lepus capensis
Body length 60-70cm

Formerly widespread and common but has declined in many areas, in part due to persecution but also because of changes in land use. Larger, longer legged and with longer, black-tipped ears than rabbit. Males chase and box one another in spring. Native to lowland Britain; present but scarce in Highlands.

Aaah!! That wild crazy stare!
Great picture! My personal character just happens to be part brown hare (and part mountain hare)!

It's almost a syndrome I have with some of these european animals. Being a wildlife enthusiast, I love them as they are, but so many of them are pests here in Australia, it's a shame.

I still love this shot, faved.

Thanks! Are hares really considered pests in Australia? I knew rabbits were, but not hares. Cheers for the info.

Well, there are plenty of other species that are a bigger problem, Cane toads, cats, mosquito fish etc.

Thanks! Yes they do seem to be very wary of anyone getting too close.

Nice photo
They're such wonderful creatures to watch
I know a place near me where I like to go and watch them. I'd need to get a longer lens though as my rubbish fieldcraft skills don't let me get very close
