How does one draw characters who would never hold hands without a specific reason, holding hands? like this

Why wouldn't they hold hands tho?

Eli, due to specifics of their character, as well as due to neglect in childhood, do not have developed mechanisms for perceiving positive or negative stimuli from other people. They do not understand many social cues and do not get positive emotions from praise and touch, which people would normally consider a sign of approval or closeness. So holding hands kinda feels meaningless to them. Not to say that they are cold and compeletely unaffectionate - they eventually learned to set personal boundaries and interact with others', but in general, an active social life is not so interesting to them. There are people who Eli really appreciates, it's just that there is less emotional attachment to them than usual, and they do not really crave any touch.

Vega just doesn't like public displays of attention. For her, it feels like something meaningless and stressful. Outside the public, tactility for her is also far from being the first channel of communication, but in general, in certain circumstances, it may arise... And well, she may like Eli that way, but she sees through their mental states but doesn't now what to do, so she doesn't often innitiate contact.... except... well welllll

In short, well, I can’t imagine these two holding hands or hugging much. But I want to see them together anyway so here we go

The thing is, Eli is also not great at self-preservation. So they regularly get some kind of danger when they try to get to the epicenters of the studied eco- and bio-disasters. So the situation in the picture is not far-fetched - this happens quite well in the plot☝

I think if I calculated and drew this picture with the dialogue between the characters, it would be something like this:
