You know, this sort of thing has happened so much that it doesn't even phase me anymore - the shock value has been used up and now it has become trite. Martin may think he is being edgy by killing all his main characters, but it's just starting to feel like a lazy way to tie up his storylines.

I don't think that's the case. Martin wouldn't have shown the ability to resurrect people if he wasn't going to use it for one or more of the main characters at one point. Checkov's Gun, so to speak. This look of abject loathing, a mix of hatred and disgust; somewhere to spitting at them or throwing up is perfect for the rise of a vengeful Jon Snow.

In the books, they actually use this ability on Catelyn Stark and it spins into a terrible side quest with Brienne of Tarth; thankfully they left this out of the cable series because it was just terrible.
That said, it seems fairly likely they'll use it to bring John back.
