Description I think this is the right category?;;;

Anyway this is a really cheapo etching test thing I did because I wanted to try out etching. :B
I sort of used the method on this site: [link]

I drew the picture on one of those 3x5 note cards, painted over it with acrylic medium, traced the drawing into the medium with an exacto knife, smushed the ink into the cracks, and pressed it onto a damp page in my sketchbook.

I think it would have been better if I had used the right kind of ink (I used block printing ink because it was $3 instead of a huge $30 bottle of etching ink, and it was really sticky XD;; ) and if I had painted the medium on thicker. Maybe I'll use plastic next time instead~

Anyway, from left to right, you're looking at: the drawing, the etched drawing with ink in the cracks, the first print attempt (didn't wipe it well enough) and the second print attempt. (seem to have wiped it too well, LOL)

It was fun

I absolutely adore these! The texture, splotchy grunge-ness is really appealing and as a set they are charming sweet job, and hurray for being cheap!

Not exactly.. it's sort of like making a print, but the.. opposite... XD;;
You get something hard and flat, (usually a metal plate) scratch a drawing into the surface, fill the cracks with ink, and press it onto paper (or whatever)

(Sorry, I sort of suck at explaining. D: )

that's really neat, I've never heard of doing an etching that way. Lol, I've only done the old fashioned metal plate, ground, and acid method...but this sounds less time consuming But I guess you can't burnish anything out if you do it with a note card. The giraffe looks nice though. I think it looks just just as an inked plate.

thats really cool! I'd love to try it sometime... hm..

but the distressed look the etching gives the print is pretty rad. Yay giraffe~!

Oooooh, gold leaf. *A* Is it expensive? XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skritchmeee In reply to nk-chan [2008-03-02 02:34:19 +0000 UTC]

$10 for 25 leaves. Each leaf is like... 5 inches square... and they go amazingly fast. Sooo yeah... 'spensive.

nk-chan In reply to skritchmeee [2008-03-02 07:09:49 +0000 UTC]

Not SO bad, considering everyone thinks of gold as super valuable~

skritchmeee In reply to nk-chan [2008-03-02 17:17:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. The price was the same for copper leaf and silver leaf.

The price of silver is SKYROCKETING these days! It is becoming SO expensive to just, like, make a bracelet! o)_(o)= And, of course, the customers don't want to absorb it, so they accuse the artists of being overpriced.

Well, I'm sorry, but the classic basic pricing model is:

materials + labor
double it
double it again

So, for some little trinket that I only work on for two classes with materials I get FOR FREE, it would be:

0 for materials + $10/hour x 6 = $60
Double is $120
Double again is $240

and people are all ZOMG SO EXPENSIIIIVE!!1111!! The markup isn't even that much. Have you seen the markup on, say, CDs? It costs them less than a dollar to make the damned things, then they turn around and sell 'em for 16 bucks!

nk-chan In reply to skritchmeee [2008-03-03 04:58:51 +0000 UTC]

Well $16 is still just $16. XD

Actually, it's still hard for me to think of charging hundreds of dollars for anything. *_*;; For one thing, it just makes me think that any little mistake I make will be horribly resented by whoever buys it.;;;;;

Really I think the price should be halved on just about every piece of art I see.
Last week I saw a painting that said $300 on it and I thought that looked about right for once, (it didn't look like the kind of painting that takes a ton of labor) but then I got closer and it was just a fancy print.;;;;; THAT is ridiculous. It's not even the real thing and it's way too much!

skritchmeee In reply to nk-chan [2008-03-03 05:56:59 +0000 UTC]

Well keep in mind that the custom framing alone on some pieces of art can cost that much.

Perhaps if the price of fine art were lower, people would be more likely to buy it - I'm all for lowering the price on high-end fine art, and raising the price on "low" art (comics pages, for example), so that "low" artists have an easier time making a living.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nk-chan In reply to skritchmeee [2008-03-03 06:53:05 +0000 UTC]

I rarely see frames on anything anymore, but I do take that into account.

And yes, I agree with that too. XD;; It all takes the same amount of effort and is capable of the same amount of publicity... I wonder why the prices aren't a bit more equal~

skritchmeee In reply to nk-chan [2008-03-04 09:04:22 +0000 UTC]

It's a matter of class distinctions - which, as illegitimate a reason as it is, is frequently the case in pricing of objects. An item may be sold for twice as much or more in a high-class store as in a low-class store. Thus, people who cater to high-class tastes are better-honored and better-paid.

nk-chan In reply to skritchmeee [2008-03-04 10:03:12 +0000 UTC]

Ah... I suppose... D:
Oh well~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skritchmeee In reply to nk-chan [2008-03-04 15:11:48 +0000 UTC]

Mmmm, yes.

Of course, there's something to be said for "low-class" art - as it's considered less "sophisticated" by the faux elite, it's more accessible, which generally means that more people like it. Thus, Diebenkorn paintings sell for obscene amounts of money, but there are a lot more people lining up to buy an original from a Batman comic book than there are to buy a Diebenkorn - both due to cost and due to popularity.

Just do yourself a favor and never allow yourself to buy the idea that "high" art is high, and "low" art is low. >_<
