I would approve of a Power Blade upgrade that allows the Power Beam to function as a melee weapon, maybe with the ability to still shoot projectiles (Sword Beam?). Imagine combining it with Ice Beam, Wave Beam, Plasma Beam, and Spazer. Ooh, what if the Blade can be charged to fire crescent-shaped Beams? You can combine that with the other Beam upgrades to use attacks like Ice Blade Beam and Plasma Blade Beam.

That would be really cool, some enemies could be weak only to melee attacks! It would be a good way to make use of these melee weapons!

That, and I could see there being obstacles that you need the Blade to cut through. Roots, wires, web, etc. It would also grant vertical coverage at close range with the arc of the swing.
Another idea: Drill Missiles! They can burrow through multiple blocks before exploding, and bore through enemies, including those with armor too tough for a regular missile or bomb. They would consume Missiles as ammo. You can also find an upgrade for Super Drill Missiles that pack even more of a punch, and likewise consume Super Missiles.
And now I have two more ideas for Power Beam derivatives: Power Shield and Power Knuckle. Power Shield can block incoming projectiles and damage enemies that touch the shield, while Power Knuckle has Samus surge forward a short distance with a powerfist, or fire a long-range punch with a mechanical fist. Ooh, maybe a Rocket Fist? Following the Drill Missile concept, you can score a Power Drill that Samus can use while moving to tunnel through tough rock and dirt. And as an altarnative or even an upgrade to the Power Blade, you can find a Power Saw (basically a hi-tech chainsaw) that cuts through enemies and obstacles.

I want Metroid Prime 4 to have an upgrade that's just a melee attack of some kind. Not just a counter like in Samus Returns, a simple bash or slash that does crazy damage to whatever's right in front of her.
Heck, just port over most of the mechanics from the new Doom while you're at it. Turn the Grapple Beam into the meat hook, give us some sort of shotgun-style blaster, make the aliens' guts visceral and disgusting. Nothing could please me more.

It's crazy now that you mention it, Samus never had a close quarter attack in the Metroid Prime series! A swing of her arm cannon should really hurt haha!
Metroid with DOOM makes too much sense haha, Samus wouldn't mind eviscerating every space pirate on sight!
