Description Lately I've been really cranking hard on a sculpture commission, and while most of it is still in various states of "what the fuck is that supposed to be?"-ness, this human skull portion of it is totally finished so I thought I'd share it.

The pictures really don't do it much justice because I really busted my ass to try and add as much detail as I could, but still leave the thing in a state where it could be easily molded and cast in resin. It was a quite interesting process of editing and reworking the anatomy to make it still look accurate, but at the same time eliminate all of the undercuts and openings that would make casting it a total bitch. Also this was really my first try at working in 1/8th scale (I'm used to 1/6th) and I was rather surprised that it wasn't too much of an ordeal to make the transition to the smaller size, and I really didn't have to sacrifice any detail. Hell I even got the cranial sutures in there!

I’ll share more of the full sculpture, which this skull is just a small part of, as the entire piece gets closer to being done… which should be quite soon.

Thanks for looking guys!

AMAZING! I love the little details. It's gorgeous including that it's small as a quarter. Great job!

I just recently worked on a life size skull in ceramic and had a hell of a time. The small scale is completely effective, and without an outside size reference, would look absolutely convincing. Nicely done!

You're being too hard on yourself. Your skull turned out really well especially considering how quickly you turned it around. That's a pretty sweet Yoda as well!

helps soooooo much when guys like u who have been in a similar position as me give out that kinda comment. A heat gun would be a great purchase... how many hours had you been at the spawn head before you put it out as that tutorial? ish

Had to double take when I first saw this. Beautufull. great detail. on average how long did you take to make that?

It took about 2 days from start to finish so maybe about 20 hours or so. I'm glad you like it!

Hey Walter. I have an important question. I see that you use Super Sculpey. I bought myself some sculpey too but now I see a Warning on the package which tells me that it contains a chemical know to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. Now I'm a bit afraid to work with it. Do you know more about this danger?

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to Rushlord [2007-09-07 06:45:13 +0000 UTC]

There's an on-going debate about how if you over-bake the stuff you'll end up releasing toxic fumes. But that only seems to come into question if you bake WAY over the recommended temperature like around 380+ degrees F instead of the 275 outlined in the instructions on the box.

So long as you don't to anything crazy like that you should be fine as far as I know. But I'm no scientist so I can't really tell you for certain.

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to Kyntio [2006-11-28 18:46:09 +0000 UTC]

Not trying to change direction completely but moreso just trying to expand my horizons. I can't get arrested out in the art world as an illustrator, so I'm going to give sculpting a shot and see if that helps move me along a bit .

I still can't believe you don't have more success than you do with your art

Very Nice Work.

If you'd like a minor criticism, work a little on the teeth (I'm a dental technician by trade). You're missing both bicuspids on the maxilla on either side of the upper (and prolly lower) arch.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to mydeviantname [2006-11-27 20:50:09 +0000 UTC]

The bicuspids aren't missing, they just totally suck.

Yeah, I totally screwed the pooch on his teeth. For some reason they look better in person than they do in these pictures, but either way they still don't look exactly "correct". I'll see if I can't get them sorted out before I consider the piece "finished" (and by "finished", I mean "I can't stand to look at it anymore") .

wow. i am so impressed by things sculpted really tiny. maybe it's because i have big fingers and not enough patience to sit there with a blob two inches from my face and attempt to make it into something. so cool beans. you have my appreciation!

No-Sign-of-Sanity In reply to britt-lipy [2006-11-28 04:27:57 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And yes 2 inches from the face is exactly right. I have to take breaks every 30 minutes or so and look at something far away down the street so my eyes can rest!
