I don't know in what kind of games you are, but I really like it! It's really different for that kind of game! It's different, colorful and a lot of fun!

well, first it's in third person, so no first person.
The second part is that the point of the game is not to kill people, it can help, but it's not your goal. Your goal, for the mode i could play on the demo named "Turf War" is simply to have your territory larger than the other team. So to have more paint than the other team on the area. Killing others help, since they have to respawn, but even there, it's not the goal. Plus, if you actually get killed, after respawn you can Super-Jump to another ally. Making it easier to go back wherever you want to be.

The demo, right now, is closed so we can't play it anymore, gotta wait until the 29th.
The game is an online game, so a lot of players can get in, in local play, i don't really know. I guess a local multiplayer would be kind of weird to play and you would probably need multiple gamepads but i don't know about that, maybe you can, maybe not.
In the game modes, Turf War was two teams of four one team against the other, so 8 players at the same time.

Is there a lot of character customizations or anything to make your character unique?

the basic characters are all the same, there's the inkling boy and girl, though, you can choose, from what i saw, your "hair" color, your eyes color, your skin color and there seems to be tons of character outfits, so i guess that the answer would be yes (:
