Okay, I never write rant journals, but this is something that's been aggravating me ever since I first started writing (no, actually. even before that.), so I'm just going to be blunt and say it right here. Right now.

(I apologize in advance if I end up offending some people, but I'd like to get this off of my chest ^_^)

A story does not have to be angsty, deep, or profound to be good.

Do there exist stories that are angsty, deep, or profound that are good? Of course! Many of those stories are, because it's one of the easiest ways to tug at an audience's heartstrings. In fact, the majority of angsty/deep/profound stories I've read go beyond "good" and approach "amazing" or "fantastic".

However, it doesn't have to be an angsty, deep, or profound story in order to be a good story.

Some of the best stories I've ever read in my life are stories that are light-hearted and funny—stories written purely for the purpose of making people laugh, forget their day's troubles, and just brighten their day for a little while. I know crack stories that suck, crack stories that are just as good as angsty stories, and I know crack stories that blow generic angsty stories out of the water.

(for example, have you ever read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"? it's one of the most hilarious and most amazing books I've ever read in my life, capable of making me simultaneously burst into laughter and ponder the meaning of life.)

I guess I should provide some context as to why I'm bringing this up, huh?

Well, after posting my last story (Luckless) about a week ago, I recently received a note about how I should be "ashamed" of writing Attack on Titan such a light hearted manner because the "deep" character of Levi is going to waste. Before that, I got a couple complaints about my Haikyuu crack story, saying that Oikawa's background called for something more "profound". Before that, I've also been insulted by people who think my stories are shit because I apparently don't know how to "add depth".

These were all by different people, by the way.

Before even getting direct complaints, I've always noticed a startling disparity between the attitudes towards angsty stories and crack-ish stories. The main example directly off the top of my head is: I've rarely ever seen stories that are crack in nature win contests, even if they're really, really good—often better than some of the stories that actually earned awards. I'm serious.

Honestly, I feel like there's this general perception that angsty stories are just inherently better, and anyone who disagrees is automatically labeled as someone not "profound" enough to appreciate tragedy. As an anime-loving, self-proclaimed, deranged fangirl, I get so much flack for this, and I sure many of you have experienced this as well. Remember that time when you were too embarrassed to say you liked some particular anime or story or video or drawing or whatever simply because it isn't considered "deep" or "complex" or "abstract" by society's standards?

By this point, I'm not even talking about just dA anymore. Whenever I say something along the lines of "I thought [insert some tragic novel here] was good, but I didn't like it as much as [insert really funny comedy story]." to my friends or my classmates, I immediately get appalled gasps and horrified looks from the people around me.

In fact, I'm actually in the midst of writing college application essays, and I've been told by my peers to not writing "funny" essays because they can make me look shallow. Yet, an essay that I wrote for Tulane University was borderline crack, and it got me accepted with a full ride. Someone must have thought it was pretty good, no?

Anyway...

//deep sigh

I guess what I'm trying to say is, don't rule out a funny story just because it isn't "profound" in the way that angst stories are. I mean, I'll admit I'm guilty of this pretty often, too. It's pretty easy to think of yourself as a profound person if you can read and appreciate a good angst story, yeah?

But I've read so many hilarious stories with subtle humor that takes a good two or three reads (sometimes even more than that!) to actually catch and understand the little things that make the story absolutely hilarious. Sometimes, I'll pull out an old crackish story I haven't read for a while, and I'll discover a lot of new things that I'd missed my first read through. I'll admit, I've tried to do that in my own stories, but I feel like they often get looked over and disregarded because people read it once, laugh for a second, and then walk away and never give it another thought—simply because it's labeled as "humor" or "crack".

So yeah.

Don't brush off light-hearted stories too easily, okay? They can be really deep, too.

I prefer comedy and fluff myself but when those come from tragic/angst moments and blend well that is when you have a winner since life is never one or the other. I have noticed that the few sad fics I've done gained attention faster than my fluff or goofy stories....then again most of mine are Hetalia which is inherently goofy and stupid due to it's comedic nature

yea :/ idk, I feel like people get really polar about all this stuff, and there ends up being a divide without much balance ._. perhaps it's just me, but I'm glad to hear you also like both! :3

I know it's ridiculous. I can't write dark without adding a little humor. I'm actually more likely to read funny over dark/angst/sad

I had to read some parts more than twice because, really? And I mean, really? Where all those people come from?

Speaking from my own experience, I always thought it was the other way round. Maybe not entirely 'funny' stories, but those without much of a plot that has a big romance sign wrote on it were 'the best'.
Other genres were put inside one bag, with this difference that angst ones were the most hated ones. Almost all of my friends say that I shouldn't write sad things because they are worse than happy things xd
Almost all of my friends say that I shouldn't write sad things because they are worse than happy things xd So I  was really surprised by your journal.

Gosh, some people just like to watch the world burn.

(Oh, and also, to your essay first, congratulation on passing :>>>, and second.... It reminded me about the exam to get on architecture subject/major? (or how I should say it, I'm sorry, I'm bad at explaining study stuff in English ;-; ).  It was about drawing something that fit the theme they gave you. And there was this one guy, who draw so good, I mean, he was a pro. And he tried to pass the exam many, many times. But he never did. Why? Because he made so beautifully hilarious works that the professors never gave him many points because of it.
Yep. )

yea, I guess some people will never be happy >_>

and I agree with you! I feel like a lot of people prefer happy stories over sad stories, but at the same time being able to understand and appreciate a more tragic/angsty story is something people can pride themselves on (me <-- guilty party) I guess there are extremes on both ends of the spectrum, and those haters are just the ones that are going to keep hating ._. but in general, I think those people are in the minority; I just wrote the journal because I was worried most people felt the same but didn't bother saying it out loud. from what I can tell though, that doesn't seem to be the case :3

(that's so sad ;~; do you have a picture of the painting? :3)

Minority barks the loudest while majority stays quiet, so it won't get involved in a stupid argument. Some say that a good joke is only understood by a mature person, but now I'm just being mean, haha. Let's hope they will just leave you alone in the future.

(Ah, no, sadly not :< I saw his works only once when my brother got some with him one day. It was more than 7 years ago so I don't think I can find any of it on art school website (as I don't remember the guy's name ^^' ))

I didn't even read this all the way through. Because the first few paragraphs were enough.
I AGREE WITH EVERY SENTIMENT!!!
I prefer writing and reading crack. My favorite anything has to make me laugh out of pleasure somehow. To me, comedy is key. (And commendable subtle humor is really hard to accomplish.)
My English Honors teacher actually likes those who aren't super serious about what they write. In fact, he reads those essays (good and bad) that made him laugh to my class.
My APUSH teacher took part in reading the essays from students on the last national exam, and he came upon a student's that was simply a short, funny, heart-warming story about why he was taking the class, instead of answering the question. My teacher gave him a full score. (He doesn't do that all the time. He was just amused after reading a bunch of crappy, repetitive answers.)
And where would we be without authors like Mark Twain? Satire is one of the greatest humor and conventions of the human race. And, when done right, the greatest way to provide crack.
Anyway, I'm sorry you had to deal with inconsiderate people. But, you know, you can't appreciate the people who appreciate you without the people who don't appreciate you. (I apologize if that didn't make sense.) I mean, where would we be if parents actually acknowledged that little kids don't appreciate what they do?
I appreciate your writing, 'cause you're an awesome writer--whether you write crack or angst. Good luck with your college acceptance rate.

I'm sorry you had to put up with those people.

I don't see why you can't write humor and crack for maybe more "deep" and "profound" series.
I mean, it's fan fiction. You should be able to write what you want, not be confined by the character's backstory or the genre of the series.
If someone can't see that, it's really their loss and they should just go read something more "deep" and "profound."

I do wonder why angsty, deep stories are considered better than crack and humor fics.
It seems kinda odd. I mean, if the stories good, why is a deep story perceived as better?

yea, I didn't pay them too much mind (because haters gonna hate, huh? xD) but I was just worried that everyone thought this way but was too kind to say it out loud. but I'm starting to see that definitely isn't the case :3

I think it's because if you can read and understand a "deeper" story, it makes you feel like a deeper person who's capable of appreciating a more profound story (me <-- guilty party at times I promise!!) that sorta stuff does make one's ego a little more inflated and it's easier to look down on people who like lighter/more simplistic stories, since they don't take much brainpower to understand. idk, just my two cents on it xD

but thank you, lovely <3 for your comment and for all of your support! ;v;

You are an amazing author.

I'm sorry if this sounds slightly stalkerish, but I have read almost all of your one-shots for Tokyo Ghoul--an amazingly angsty and deep anime/manga--and the lightheartedness in your pieces can always manage to make me smile. Reading your journal shed a light to a topic I've never really given thought to. I usually write angst myself (mostly because it's the genre I'm better at) and I mostly read angst because it helps me see how I can improve. I admit that I haven't thought of many crack stories as deep, but that doesn't mean dipshitty asshats should criticize amazing work like yours. Your words are truly inspiring, and I guarantee I speak for many when I say they brighten my day.

I forgot where I was going with this, but yeah. I got all my thoughts out.

Thank you so much for gracing the world of DeviantArt with your writing, and thank you for taking the time to read this. I hope you will receive only praise, and that you will do well in college. Have a wonderful day.

That's their loss. Dresden files isn't Lord of the Rings but it's an intriguing series.

Anyways, some of us can't write crack to save our lives.

Preach! Writing is writing, and all genres are equally good. It's up to the author to bring out the best of the genre, but it's also up to the reader to be able to see it themselves. Obviously these people don't know how to appreciate good writing!
Lmao I've never thought about genre discrimination before, we should call it genrism.

Dude. Don't sweat that shit.
Some people have a load of extra time on their hands if they're able to read yours fics, then decide to compose some trolling criticism about how you should be ashamed of writing comedy. That's dumb.
So far, in my experience, the people that criticize find it easy to do so because 1) they're behind a screen, and 2) they don't take the time or effort or heart to produce any art/writing/music/etc. of their own.
Writing comedy is a difficult skill. I find it much harder to make people laugh than anything else with writing...especially when sarcasm is your main form of humor IRL. Ha.

And I agree about Greystream  crack fics.  You should check out the drunk Armin one. It's pretty quotable.

Really though, I don't understand why people can't just lighten up. Just because it's a crack story, doesn't mean it not as good as a heart wrenching angst that's 4000 words.

Do Comedy TV shows lesser quality than those serious moody ones, just because it doesn't have the same serious atmosphere?? No. Hell, some Comedies are better than the air-choking serious TV shows out there. Just sayin'.

Hmm, i haven't tried my hand in a humorous fic in such a long time since i usually try to aim for angst/romance and all that other stuff.
since i'm feeling a little lost, i'll just have to do some researching to make a crack!fic

i'm really upset that people admit these negative comments to you so bluntly, and it frustrates me how you say that you don't add "depth" to your stories. i've read so many of them, and each time i'm either laughing, crying or smiling when i read them.

oh, nono love don't feel pressured into thinking you have to write one <3 write whatever you want; they're all really good regardless of genre :3

and yea, but I guess haters are gonna hate, huh? xD idk, I didn't pay them too much mind. I was just more worried that everyone thinks this way internally, and those that spoke out were simply the more vocal ones. I'm really glad (like, really, really glad) to hear that isn't the case!

ah this is so true.

Any genre of writing can be an amazing fic.

And really, fluffy humorous fics can brighten up anyone's day!
You just continue doing what you do best, and ignore those people who try to control what you do and don't do! (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧

I guess people like peeps with sad stories because it is easier to sell bad news than good news...if I make any sense..sorry...I like both really. XD

yea, I completely get what you're saying! and I love both genres (and others too, of course <3) but I hate that one has a worse reputation than the other ;~;

this is so true and i know i'm a stereotypical angst writer but

not weird at all, love <3

I love angst (both reading and writing ;D) as much as the next person, but crack-tastic stories are pretty awesome, too ;~; but I hate it so much when people just brush them off like they're nothing...
