Congrats on getting them to breed! I once tried to breed my fancy CT/DT mix male Rainbow (cream-pink-purple-bluish purple) with a purply-pink female DT, but the spiky bugger just would not cooperate *headdesk* The babies from that pair would have been spectacular.

Here's hoping most of your fry make it to adulthood.

Wow, those are some good in-water shots of Frogspawn.

How'd you take those without moving the spawn?

Luckily my male built a nest near the fishtank glass, so it was really easy to capture it

Ah, I see. So it's a nest-building species. I take it they're the sort that exhibit a little protection of their spawn... but I highly doubt they'll exhibit parental care, it's rare in fish.

Hmm, what do you plan to do with the larvae? They're gonna grow up at some point, after all. Are you gonna sell them?

It's betta fish, so the male can take care of little fishies up to two months They are wonderful parents in fish world.
I plan to keep them since the only way to have more than one betta fish in your tank is to breed them (thy don't attack their family members).
I have a 100 L aquarium just for them

O_O Wow, you were really prepared. I mean, fish clutches are massive, in a pet situation where mortality is decidedly lower, I guess you HAVE to be that prepared...

...I mean, usually, the fish reproductive strategy makes the assumption that many will die- it's called the 'R-type' reproductive strategy, while the converse, small clutches with large investment and percentage survival, is the K-strategy.

Pet situations turn everything into a K-esque situation, even with R-sized clutches. We humans are K-reproducers, it makes sense we feel that survival has to be absolutely prioritised.

Yup, I read a lot before I started mating my fishies
Apparently when it comes to betta fish females are more dangerous to the spawn, than males (they try to eat it), so you have to separate your female as quick as you can after the spawning. The male takes care of the nest and protects eggs/larvae at all cost (my male even searches for the eggs that fell from the nest to the bottom and re-attaches them).

you know, the female sometimes helpes the male collect eggs and put them in the nest, in that case she can stay until all the eggs are in (this gives them a chance to 'embrace' several times and collect the eggs in between) it depends on the female though.

My female is an 100% egg eater - after they finished their mating sessions she has started to search for eggs on the bottom of the tank and simply eat them. She even tried to get some from the nest but the male chased her away

Wow. Betta fish are certainly bizarre compared to the average fish. I'm a Marine Biology Student, but only first-year... I've just been dealing in generals, but some species' specifics are fascinating...
