Description Here is my first character for my upcoming animation I am currently working on. This character will likely be one of the central protagonists and is fast becoming one of my favorites to render and write story-line for.

I thought of the design of the character, the back-story, rendered the lines, and of course will be animating the various movements and posing.

I figure a brief description is in order:

Like so many other characters in the setting, Brack is a mercenary with a code. He hails from a far-away planet of dragons and is a veteran of a recent technological war that his people are still recovering from.

Brack has lived over a century now and participating in the losing side of an intergalactic war and witnessing its aftermath firsthand has made him quite jaded towards politics, and the motivations of "short-life" races in general. Brack still cares enough about the people around him to keep his team alive, but finds himself increasingly distant from the public at large.

Brack journeyed to Korsun as a wanderer, another frontier world with weak authority and plenty of opportunity for mercenaries such as himself; As odd as it sounds, Brack is trying to find some purpose or reason for his endeavors and to try and make some sense of the events in his past, though as he has not found such purpose he continues to wander.

Thanks! Glad you like the character, there's definitely been a lot of editions, but I really like his latest incarnation.

What a good looking character. Does he have feathers?

Thanks.

Feathers? Hmm, no I suppose not. Then again I haven't really seen that many dragon anthro's with feathers personally... I'm having trouble even picturing what that would look like.

Do you have a link to an example, I'm kinda curious now.

I haven't really seen many pictures either, but my friend, who is a very good reptilian artist, Droakir , said that his character would most likely have feathers than fur, feathers that "look like hair from a distance".
This is his character fav.me/d7janom
It doesn't really look... unusual in any way.
Other example would be this guy, who is a parrot-lizard hybrid. fav.me/d7hxnlq
Lastly, when I drew dinosaurs, I tried that, so this came out fav.me/d7kwpoa
It just seems that scalies are much more likely to have feathers than actual hair... At least dinosaurs, according to scientists.

Ah ok. I think Droakir has already fave'ed this submission I believe.

Interesting examples, though I prefer to just avoid the head hair entirely as it makes things a lot easier. (I like to think that his horns form a sort of Mohawk).

Also, for the race that Brack is, I wanted to try and get away from the usual "dinosaur" or "reptile" distinction and instead call him a type of Therapsid.

Therapsids are a type of animal that existed in the "Permian" geologic period prior to dinosaurs. They shared qualities of both reptiles AND mammals, sadly they went extinct in one of many mass-extinction events. But having Brack's race be a type of Therapsid would allow me some more artistic freedom with the character and kinda let me give members of his race some mammalian features without it seeming too ridiculous.

Anyway, thanks for the comment.

I usually avoid hair or feathers on reptilian characters myself. Adding feathers is a more recent thing, based on the late-period dinosaurs being discovered with feathers. But that would only fit with late-period dinosaurs, not early-period ones. If you're going with a Therapsid, you definitely wouldn't have feathers on it. Also, Therapsids are cool. That's a great direction to take your characters.

This is an example of a character sketch I did with feathers that I think LanceDannyF was referring to: fav.me/d7na6rp

Yeah, I got the idea from my geology class. When they showed findings of some reptilian creatures that had mammalian qualities, such as a more upright posture, different bone layout, and more warm blooded circulatory systems.

With Brack, I figure he'll be the product of a long evolutionary history starting with Therapsids. This also means I can give members of his race features that may not have been present even with therapsids, if its assumed that the life on his planet evolves from that and not early mammals. With the female members of his race for example, they would probably have breasts and some kinda head hair, though I'm not sure yet if feathers would look good; I figure though if age of wonders AND elder scrolls can get away with that then I can make it work.

Anyway, thanks for the comment. I appreciate the support and conversation. Though a lot of the characters that follow will be other anthro types, I believe there's maybe one or two other dragons in the cast though.

I think you'd be fine with the character design choices you were mentioning. I definitely like the fact that you have thought through things like the anatomy of the different species genders. That's something a lot of folks (at least that I've seen) tend to sort of gloss over in the production of a game product.

I look forward to seeing the rest of the cast of characters.

Well I figure its best to put the thought in first, and then follow the design from that. Rather than the other way around. I think since Brack is the primary character I've probably put the most thought into his storyline and background, though I think the others will be interesting too in their own way.

Well about half the cast has been posted up already, more will follow bit by bit in the days ahead.

Sounds cool, with all the freedom.
My species of anthropomorphic characters are usually referred to as 'manimals' (though in story the word is often used as a downgrading one). Because they are kind of man+animals, having characteristics of both species.

And as a result some have facial hair [or just hair, even if feathery] when they shouldn't.
[the weirdest example is when birds have it. that's the mysterious hair that grows from bone!
fav.me/d7hxwvd ]

And you're welcome.

Yeah, the key to writing a good story is knowing when to stick to regular conventions and when to break away. I figure the idea will be to present a situation that might seem familiar, but with a different twist. We'll see if the approach works.

Well being as how Brack was on the losing side of a war he'll get plenty of names thrown at him. Ranging from "tail dragger: to "blue blood" and maybe even "smoke choker"; which he'll handle with varying degrees of irritation and the occasional retort mocking their intelligence overall.

Anyway, thanks for the comment and support.
