I can tell you right now, the books are a lot better than the movie. The movie was ok, but they messed up the sequences and added unnecessary things. Also, it kinda ruins it for the people who haven't read the books. because you dont find out steve is evil intill another book. and even then, they're both older. steve being an adult and darren like a older teen because he ages really slow.
