Oh boy, these no-lineart pictures eat a lot of time 0__0(and Yugi's crazy hair didn't want to convert)
When I drew this I was thinking of the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga and anime (i.e. before Duel Monsters). Back then Yugi didn't know about the Pharaoh, he'd get beaten up almost every episode and instead of playing with cards they played with knives and fire. Back then Yami no Yugi wasn't shy about using his dark powers and would mete out mind rape left, right and centre <3
I dunno, I mostly like the concept of a harmless kid being possessed by a dark spirit more than anything
And Yami no Yugi did seem slightly evil back then

Yami no Yugi was more than a little crazy in the beginning. I guess 3,000 years of isolation, plus amnesia, will do that to a person. It's a credit to Yugi that he gentled his darker half as much as he did.

I wouldn't say Yami was 'evil', it was more of 'an eye for an eye' with him. The worse you acted, the worse he did.

I love this! You're right, that version of Yugioh was pretty badass. Yami did change throughout the manga, but he didn't change from being badass. The only thing that changed was that Yami and Yugi started working together like a team instead of being in their separate ways. Yami was still as badass and still playing Shadow Games.

That's just his way of teaching the villains who did any kind of harm to Yugi a lesson.

I loved that early concept too - and I dance with joy every time I see an art based on it. Especially - such beautiful, expressive and well-drawn art. The colours, Yami's grasp and his red eye... Simply amazing.

Fantastic! I love absolutely everything about this painting.
This is a concept I have always liked and the reason I love season-0, and you have managed to encapsulate it perfectly. I love how you have managed to create a sense innocence within Yugi without having to resort to dressing him in all white while Yami is little more than a malevolent presence - more a concept or ideal - than a physical being. I also love how you have managed to create the illusion of fire encircling them using the colors in the background without actually painting the flames themselves.
With the fire behind Yami and the glow coming off of Yugi, this painting looks more like a representation of their respective souls, rather than an actual physical moment within their lives, with Yami's darkness surrounding but not smothering Yugi's light.. And yet, even though there is this dark entity embracing him, Yugi doesn't seem to mind it. He seems relaxed, even content. He's not digging his hands into Yami's arms trying to get him to let go, in fact, his right hand even seems to be holding Yami's in place.
Yami, on the other hand, almost seems to be cradling Yugi, protecting him. I've always loved the thought that it is the darkness's job to protect the light, and this painting shows that. Yami's hand is even covering Yugi's eyes, as if trying to shield him from all the ugliness in the world, including the ugliness Yami is more than capable of dishing out to those who threaten his host.
On a more technical note, I really like how you have created a skewed balance between the two. Despite Yami's darkness and flames taking up more than half (closer to three/fourths) of the canvas, he does not overwhelm or dominate the painting. It is Yugi that actually draws the eye and keeps the viewers attention from first look to last.

Oh, God he DID seem evil! I have to say, I liked the beginning of the original manga more too, even though he illustrations weren't as finished looking.....ANYWAY, I really like this! I love the way you made Yugi's hair look. Great job!

But, I love how it was done, the 'lines' are smooth, and the colouring is wonderful. You really grasped the concept too~ Yami Yuugi was done perfectly, as was Yuugi, and everything else

Yeah, it took waaay longer than I thought it would =/ it started off as a really simple sketch... but I was having too much fun drawing it!!
I'm SO glad I took the time to properly finish it than leave it half-assed and sketchy as I was planning to
