Wow. That would be an insane fight. Gandalf would totally win, though. He's pure magic and beat a Balrog by himself, Melisandre is a mage of the Fire God who gives birth to demons. Wonder if they would work together, though. They are a part of the Age of Heroes in a way.

ALSO! I NEVER realized until now that Tolkien and Martin have two Rs for their middle names. That is so weird. Are the most popular Fantasy writers all like that?

I took Gandalf as someone who abandoned the Gods. That, to him, they were dead. As he becomes as Gandalf The white. So it depends when they met. In this piece, I had him still being Gandalf the Grey. I would love to think that he'd draw her away from being a priestess (I see her less as a mage and more acting for the Fire God) and being solely into magic. I think Gandalf has the intelligence and charm to do that. Melisandre is a powerful weapon. Gandalf never neglected weapons. He just used them for the better good.

As for the RR, I think George did that as an homage. It isn't common.

Gandalf rejecting the Valar, the Lords of the West(AKA Gods), whom he serves, the ones who charged him to aid in the defeat of Sauron, whom he returned to when his task was finally done?

Not likely.

Although I suppose Saruman going over to Sauron was unlikely too.

I would love to see a depiction of Gandalf joining her.

She'd be more likely to join Him, if only for the Ring of Fire he holds.

Oh, if Gandalf has it his way... she'll be a pure snowflake by the end.
