Well done, but it would controvert the basis of the series.
The issue isn't gender specific. Absence of romance makes clear that the relationships are based upon a commitment to a nobler ideal (than romance, sex, what-have-you). Male-female pairings would be equally problematic. At a guess that's why the writers have made such relationships either lost or sacrificed. I sincerely hope the recent addition of the Sara Shahi character doesn't upset that balance -- nor perturb the platonic closeness of the male leads.
One wonders when there will be a mainstream show where a past romantic male-male pairing is lost and/or sacrificed and thereby excluded as a possibility in present and future and THAT would be seen as a noble sacrifice (I'm obviously not referring to any ludicrous right wing concept of noble here).
