Description Waru (mommy gerbil) and Kawaii (daddy gerbil)..
have now eleven babies.
That are the first 6 of them.
Here they are half-naked with little bit of fur.
And because Waru is really the hand-tamest gerbil you can find, she lets me help her with giving her babies milk, cuz she didn't have enough for all of them.
That's also the reason why I could take them in my hand, even when they were this little.
That photo is ca. 8 month old, and all from them are healthy, edacious and very eccentrically beings. x3
Names are in order from the left to the right one:
Gaara, Murky, Kyu, Jira, Whitey and Orlin.
And yeah, all there names have a reason. XD
Just ask, when you want to know, ne.

I don't think I've ever seen anything like this. Six little pink miracles

I also like how you carefully explained that taking the photo didn't hurt them. I'm glad they all grew up healthy!

I do love gerbils. Or really all rodents. Most of them are just cute as hell.
Thank you for the compliment. I appreciate it.

I love all rodents, but gerbil are my obsession. I could spend hours just sitting and watching my two gerbils Do you breed gerbils?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Nonexistenz In reply to Jaydapple [2012-01-07 08:48:57 +0000 UTC]

I did breed gerbils, yes. But I stopped it a while ago. I do plan to breed again sometime, but not now..
It's amazing and wonderful to have baby gerbils, but it's work too. Right now I try to breed acacia rats. Unsuccessful so far.
But yeah, gerbil are pretty amazing pets. They do count to the top of my obsession with rodents, too, for sure.

That is cool I want to breed gerbils but there are supposivly "too many animals in this house right now and to breed gerbils you said we would have to get two more..." and so on but i guess my parents are right, cause we have a few cats that we almost never see, two dogs, a retired breeding pair of rats, a hamster, 2 parrots, a snake, 2 ferrets and my pet mouse, along with my gerbils Sky and Thunder. So yeah i think we do have too many animals in the house right now but maybe in the furture I will breed gerbils cause i would love a challenge with the rodents i love.

So what is a acacia rat? I've never heard of them before and do they not breed well in a household envoirment?

Well good luck with your rats

Nonexistenz In reply to Jaydapple [2012-01-07 22:08:08 +0000 UTC]

Wow, that's really a lot of various pets you got there. Pretty cool.
I only have rodents. Rats, acacia rats, gerbils, persian jirds, egyptian dwarf gerbils and barbary striped grass mice.
Good luck breeding gerbils when you do start that someday then.

Oh, acacia rats are very beautiful pets. I love them. Most people don't know about acacia rats, they seem a bit rare to have as a pet.
You have to know, a acacia rat only gets 1-2 babies at a time, and that not even regularly. And most Acacias, not all, but most, are monogamous, so they have one partner and won't get pregnant from others. Which is really helpful to avoid incest. Also most Acacia groups only have one pair that reproduces. If the female acacia rat gets a kid, the baby holds on to the mother while she walks around nearly all the time. I can't describe it better than this, so I will show you a picture. Like here, look: [link] Thats a acacia rat that has babies a few weeks old.
Also acacias get very old too, which I think is great. And while most people would tell you that you need a big cage for them, I noticed that they don't really care as long as the cage is interesting enough and has enough climbing possibilities. They just love it to climb, some people call them tree-rats, with a reason. Bad things about them is, that acacia rats are kinda really shy, you can get them tame if you take your time, but after more than 1 year, only half of my acacias are tame. The tend to panic sometimes.. thunderstorms, cleaning the cage, you name it, they panic very easily. And sometime they tend to fight and be generally aggressive, not always, but they have days, when it's almost impossible to touch them without getting bitten. And acacia rats bear grudges, you do something they don't like or misunderstand? The chance that they will forgive you are really slim, they stay resentful to you. They have great memory, too.. which can be good and bad.
Acacias are very very clever animals. They do what they want, you can't force them to do anything.
So, to the point... they breed well enough, the problem is having that baby stay alive.
My female acacia rat had a baby 4 times now. All of them died. The problem is, that my rat seems to not want any more kids,
so she killed one of the babies she had. One she ate. One died without reason. And the last one was dropped accidently and died.
The oldest of her babies was 4 weeks old. But the kids never stay alive long.
The last and oldest one that died she even seemed to like. Now I have a depressed acacia rat. Which is horrible.
Right now... I don't think she will get pregnant again.

Well i wonder if you can cheer up your sad acacia rat. They sound like interesting little creatures that i would love to give a home to, but i dont know much aboout them and from what info you gave me i dont think they would be a good fit in my life right now as my brother is loud but maybe when i have a house of my own i could try them! They sound like interesting little rodents

You are lucky to not have 2 stupid parrots (I like parrots but these 2 are just plain stupid...they cant even sit in a perch sometimes without falling off like they are dead which they arn't of course cause they get right back up dazed) squaking their heads off in the middle of the night. But you seem to have a vaeity of rodents That is how i wish my life could be parrot/dog/cat/snake free with rodents all over the house (in big/perfectly sized cages of course!) for me to spend my day caring to. I'm just a rodent person like some are dog people or cat people, thats just me Sorry to dump my trobled wishes on to you!!

Well hope you have susess with your rattie and she is not so deppressed in the future Good luck an thanks for all the info it was very interseting!

Oh, no problem at all. I like to listen and to talk. So write and rant away at me. I enjoy it.

Well, I'm a rodent person too. So I get what you mean.
I can't even imagine having parrots. Most be annoying as hell.
I live alone, so I got the pets I wanted and was able to pay.
There are some on my wishlist to have someday, but right now,
it's not manageable for me. But yeah, the rodents I do have now, it's nice.

Thank you. But my acacia rat was depressed for a while now.
As I told ya, very smart pets, they don't forget anything. So it will take time.

Yeah I love to listen/read and to blab away too

Yeah when i'm in college hopfully i can get away from those idiot parrots but till then I can only hope one of my dogs get them and they have a gentle painless death...cause i cant find anyone to take them cause my brother tuaght them curse words so they sometimes start to yell them at you and so nobody will take high matnance parrots that will yell words they dont want their kids and the only words they know (besides "Hi", "Me want apple" and "bye" with curse words mixed in) so you can see they yell them alot.

I just relized but how have we gotten so far off topic from you photo of the slepping baby gerbil cause we are off talking about parrots and acacia rats while all of this is being put under the comment section on your photo? Ha it is funny that we are so of topic and almost non of this is about your photo any more.

You said that your rats are very smart, since they are so smart could they open their cage if they realy wanted to?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Nonexistenz In reply to Jaydapple [2012-01-10 10:02:43 +0000 UTC]

Cool. So let's keep up talking and ranting at each other.

Oh my, cursing parrots. Wow. You should make a video
of them yelling curse words, I would love to see this.
Very extraordinary, huh.

Yeah, you are right. But nearly nobody comments on my shit anyway,
so I don't care if we spam my photo.

Uhm... can my acacia rats open their cage if they wanted to? They already do.
Sometimes it's annoying as hell to come home and see my acacias walk around.
They always stop one moment and stare at me, like "Oh, well.. you are home? Who cares?
But hey, now that you are here, give us some more food." Sometimes, they even climb the walls
and go back into their cage. But opening cage doors? They do it all the time.
If I want to be sure they stay in the cage, I have to I use clothes pins and strings on the doors as extra barricade.

I'm SOOOO HAPPY( sorry for the caps) I'm happy cause one of the stupid parrots died today (and no i didnt let the dog and the parrot out at the same time... i let the parrot out and my brother let the dog in not knowing the parrot was out...so you see how that went) and i found a home for 3 of the 5 cats we have plus the dude that wants the cats said he will take the other parrot as a gift for a family member (yes he does know they curse at you he saw for him self) so know the house is parrot free and all i need to do is get rid of the snake and the other 2 cats

I would hate it if every time i came home my gerbils and my mouse were running around the house Does it get annoying trying to catch them or do you just leave them to run free when you dont feel like it?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Nonexistenz In reply to Jaydapple [2012-01-15 22:35:10 +0000 UTC]

Glad to hear that you are happy. And parrot free now.
How come your family got so many pets in the first place?

Sometimes I just let them run free, when I come home and see the open cage door again.
Sometimes it annoys me so much and I try to catch them as fast as I can. Some I can always catch,
some even 'listen' to me, when I say 'come here'.. but 2.. oooohh, 2 of those rats, they drive me insane.
When those 2 don't want to go into their cage, they just don't let themselves be caught.
That's what I hate the most when they escaped their cage again. Those 2 are annoying as hell.
One time I needed 4 days to get one of them back into the cage. Since then I barricade the cage doors extra hard
and this happened not as often as before anymore.

Sorry it has taken me sooo long to reply...my computer took a flying leap let just say...
the cats were form when my great grandmother was unable to care for them well, the dog we have had since before i was born, the parrots were rescues from the person in the house behind us that abandom them flying free around the house with no food or water, my brother just showed up with a tiny 4cm long corn snake one day and my parent's didn't think it would grown to 3ft long since corn snakes woun't out grown their containers yeah thye didnt think right cause currently it is 5ft long...so my brother started to breed mice to feed to the snake when it got to 2ft and so i dropper feed a litter when the mom was accidentaly feed to Cornflakes(that is the snakes name) so only one baby lived so i kept him as a pet since he was soooo tame. the gerbils came about the same time as the mouse became a pet. the ferret was the last pet that a friend that was moving to hawii(how ever you spell it...)gave to us because ferrets are ilegal to keep as pets there so all of the animals slowly started to pile up after a while and we dont have as many animals know that the parrots and cats are gone (they also went to great homes too, so far i went to visit the lady that took 2 of the cats and they are living life good! they even have their own little yard so they can be outside but cant run in to the street.)

Those 2 sound like a real pain, it is cool that a few will come to you when you say come here i wonder if they would be any good at agility? cause im currently teaching my mouse agility here is a few websites i found on rat, mouse, hamster, and gerbil agility. But dont try to buy their jumps they are just popcicle sticks glued together(plus they lady doesnt maintan the site any more so you will never get them)plus they are very easy to make on your own good luck getting your rats in their cage!

Well, I'm sorry too. I never had time to write you in the last few days. So Sorry.

Wow. A 5ft long snake? Amazing. รด.o I always had a thing for snakes.
I wouldn't get one. But I like them pretty damn much.
I would love to see a photo of Cornflakes (what a name for a snake, your brothers idea?).

Thanks for the link. My rats are certainly smart enough. I think I will try it. Looks interesting.
How is your teaching of agility going?

And hey, I just need to tell someone right now. One of my acacia rats got kids. Again.
But this time, they seem like they will stay alive. Already opened their eyes,
and looking all around more heathy than all the others before. I'm so damn happy!
I only worry about the mother this time. She got really really really thin the last few days,
the kids take a toll on her for sure. Especially.. she got 3 babies... 1 or 2 are normal for acacias.
3 is way to much. I hope everything keeps being okay with them, I don't want to see another acacia die.

I will have to try and take a picture some day if i can work up the courage to go in the same room as it (i try to avoid it cause it would happily eat my mouse and gerbils plus it is a bit scary)but yeah the name was my brothers idea.

Hope they like it. My mouse is pretty good but he doesn't understand that he has to go up on to the pause table and not sit there staring at it to get the treat. He hasnt figured out yet that i put the treats on the table not in front...Hopfully he will figure it out someday have you started any training with any of your rodents?

That GREAT!! Hopefully they will be fine and the mother will cope. three kids(is that what you call them not pups?) sounds like a lot for one mommy rat if i was here they would drive my insane. Do you keep the dad in with them or will he harm the babies? And if you do keep the dad in with them does he help at all? cause gerbils do but i dont know about acacia rats. I too hope none of them die even thought i cant see them or have ever met them...i cant stand any little rodents dieing they all deseve to live in my opion. Good luck hope the mom is not too over worked

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Nonexistenz In reply to HeritieR [2008-10-05 01:53:11 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the comment!

Ah, I hadn't thought someone would really ask the reasons behind their names. Ha, you're cool. ;]

Anyway, here ya go:
Gaara: She got read eyes (and when she got older read-orange fur, too) she is very self-loving and a little bitchy and eccentrically monster. Even when she was so little! She so egomaniacal, it's a strange behaviour for group-living animals. Yeah, she is kind of adorable too but so damn freakish, it's abnormal. xD
Murky: He is the darkest one of them. And their parents are only white with a little bit of orange. So it's rather strange that he comes out with murky golden and black fur...
Kyu: She does this cute noises. Sounds like: Pfieekyuu~ Pfieeekyu~ That's unique. And she does that every day. On many occasions... so yeah.
Jira: The officially name-meaning from Jira is: Young thunder. And he got yellow-orange fur. I have never seen so much yellow in a gerbils fur before.. And he is a fast little thing. When he runs and doesn't want to be caught, you could never, really never, catch him.. so I thought that names suits him.
Whitey: He got just white fur. Only white. Therefore he's the only white gerbil of mine.
Orlin: The officially name-meaning from Orlin is: Venturesome. And that is all he is. He jumps on a regulary basis from high places. (I give my gerbils every day a run in the living room, and he loves it to climb on the windowsill and jump from it, explanation enough? xD)

That's why they got this names. Yeah, yeah.
Thank you for asking, ne.
