Description August 2015 - Digital Illustration - "Lady Yamato" - 8 Hour process. - The Onna-bugeisha were female warriors throughout Japan's antiquity. From all social classes and titles, the women of the Yamato answered the call of war to serve their lords and ladies and were renowned through Japanese literature and myth as valiant and equal warriors in battle. Unfortunately, with the westernization of Japan from outside forces, the stereotype of the gentle and submissive Asian woman and inept and weak man spread while tales of valiance and gripping adventure were rejected. This proud history of the woman of Japan is what inspired me to illustrate this piece. If one looks deeper, the "gentler sex" was far from gentle and could be and was just as brutal, and strong as the other.
