Description So far, the progress of my oil painting of "First Meeting."
Original sketch can be found here: [link]
Almost done..need to make time to finish this sometime

I plan to add some vines to the trunk of the oak she's sitting beside, as well as finish up details in the background, and finish painting the characters, Rayvenne and Archibald.

Any suggestions or comments appreciated! Leave me a message!

Strange that even in death ,you find true love eternal.

go to show that death isn't as morbid as many are led to believe.

yay! i love your new painting style-different from your graphic kind of painting you did in highschool

my crit is that it's a good composition but it's looking a little flat, meaning you need more depth
you could do a couple of things to separate the foreground from the background, de-saturate the colors- the value on mr skeleton's jacket is beginning to match that value of the dark blue on the hill right behind him so i'd say to maybe lighten up on your colors in the background- an even better way to understand what i'm talking about is to take this picture, put it in photoshop and put it in black and white-if your values in your foreground and background are too similar to each other, the entire composition and focus of your painting just gets washed out

also to make the background more interesting, you could maybe add a little graveyard right next to that church on the horizon line just to add a little more depth-it doesn't bother me that the middle ground is kind of empty because that's where you seem to want your viewer to focus on, their hands holding (at least to me XD) so i'd say just keep it that way if that's what your going for

the branch of the tree in the middle is so close to the edge of the tree in the foreground, it's forming a tangent so either put the branch behind the tree in front or pull the branch back in

the tree that the girl is resting on is looking more like a draped cloth than a tree so the vines or moss growing on one side of it might be a good idea or you could just crop it further in on the final piece - if you want to keep it the way it is you could accentuate the curves in the tree because as i said, it looks more like cloth than wood~so try to curve it where the forms in the tree sinks and emerges-think about the shape of a cylinder and when you light it- you can tell what part of the form is curving away from you because it's in shadow and you can tell what part of the form is coming towards you because it's highlighted by the light
this second solution might sound a little more tough, but you could try adding some texture to it...like make it look more like there is some bark on the tree or just adding little scratches or cuts...anything to show a little aging

haha you could try getting one of those cardboard toilet paper roll things and holding it under one light source- that might help

doing this is difficult to do D: i'm not a pro and of course i have a really hard time doing this myself
but it's easier to figure out where your highlights and shadows go when you figure out where your light source is coming from
in painting, lighting is KEY-it helps your characters and environment come to life (especially when you're trying to tell a story)
it helps to pay attention to the lighting in films haha gives you something to look at if the film sucks
i hope i helped you in some way-you really are making good progress (which proves that you can make awesome paintings without having to go to any of these expensive snobby art schools haha) ---i'm still relatively new to painting (correctly) so don't take my word as like....the law of painting XD it's just really my opinion

if you have more questions i think we should meet up- bring all your stuff and i could photocopy some of my handouts for your--my school's library also has a lot of 'the art of....' disney books (i managed to borrow the mulan one ) and a lot of good reference books we could just go crazy and break the photocopying machine

WOW thanks so much for the critique, kate! you have no idea how much i appreciate all of this.
i take all of your help and guidance as "the law of painting", haha. you learn way more about these sorts of things than i do, and so i look to you as my sort of "mentor."
i'm going to keep working on this. you inspire me!
and i can't tell you how much i am OBSESSED with "art of..." books. most ESPECIALLY the disney ones, as you probably already knew!
aadgkasjfbajghhH! lol
i would like to buy the new "art of tangled" book
and for sure, sounds like so much fun!!! we should get together whenever we both get a break! yeah!

OMAIGAWD I GOT THE ART OF TANGLED! it's pretty much the first disney art of book i ever bought BUT I LAV IT!! ;A; and i can't believe i totally missed out on the kung fu panda art book...it's out of stock at most stores and now it costs over $100 online

you should grab those "art of..." books that you really like as soon as you can (and while they're only $30-40) for me, the best place to buy them is from barnes and noble-if you join them for membership, you get a membership discount and lots of coupons like every week or every other week. oh and if you want to see other art books, we should go visit stuart ng [link] they carry a lot of french art books/comics and art by artists that have worked at pixar, dream works, disney, etc i've bought a couple of books from them
they are all the way in torrance which is like....45 minutes away

but this weekend, on saturday and sunday (2/5-2/6) stuart ng books will be at the pasadena book fair i actually have a free pass for myself and a guest-if you wanna come call me..or i'll call you XD i know it's short notice though D:

Shutup! I am so jealous! hehe I think I'm going to purchase it from Barnes & Noble. Is Barnes & Noble membership free to join?
Nice! Thanks for all the tips. I can't get enough of "Art of.." books. They're so fascinating and full of concept art and goodness!
I'd like to go with you sometime to these bookstores! They sound AMAZING!

So let me know about this weekend if you plan to go to the Pasadena book fair and if you still have an extra pass! I don't think I have any plans, I'm just headed home Thanks love!
