Description I had a very interesting conversation about gender-bending with someone recently….which is actually pretty common. And I’ve been seeing a lot of really interesting gender-bend art on the internet….which I know some people don’t like but whatever. Besides being fun, gender bends are actually a surprisingly good exercise, both artistically and from a character-building standpoint. My roomie, Rue, and I have also had a lot of really interesting discussions about body type in comic books, and how male super-heroes, much like females suffer from a bad case of all having the same build. We also watched Venture Bros., one of my favourite shows.

Which all came miraculously together when I decided I’ve never seen any gender-bend art from VB…which is surprising, really.

Mostly I was intrigued by the challenge of doing some gender-bending in a show that is, by and large, a men’s club.

Don’t get me wrong…I’m not trying to say there’s anything wrong with that! I love that show exactly as it is. But it’s worth noting that it is a show populated by mostly male characters (and a handful of really fucking awesome women) and those male characters are very…male.

And what I mean by that is that unlike some other things that I have brainstormed gender-swapping with various people, the characters are very tied to their gender within the story, making gender-swapping still possible, but more difficult. As far as I’m concerned, anything with good, solid characters and writing can be gender-swapped (with a few exceptions…usually characters whose story is tied to a gender-specific issue or something like that). Good characters are more than just a gender. You can change all you want about their outside and still have the same solid character underneath with the same motivations and personality.

Which is why, as I said previously, gender-swaps are fantastically fun exercises and I highly recommend doing them.

THAT SAID.

Enjoy this lady Rusty Venture. There are some things I don’t like about it, and it took me awhile to figure out a lot of the particulars…..in early concepts I was changing the designs a lot more. In the end I went for a minimal change approach, style included. The challenge was making sure to keep that fabulous Rusty-Venture poster and avoid the common trap of sexy-gender-bending. 8|

Wow, this is great. One of the best I've seen by far. There's definitely not enough genderbent VB pics out there. Glad I found this gem.

I totally agree about the genderbending. For me, I genderbend because I have a hard time writing male personality types. I'm amazing with girl characters (mostly because I see a little bit of me inside them) but dudes elude me. Its very good practice and its helped me a lot.

And if you wanna give your lady Venture a more feminine name than Rusty, might I suggest Ginger? :3

your style is really cool, and I like the fact you didnt have to make her look like a supermodle to make the picture so great. The personality comes through and is still the same! love it!

I was really trying hard to keep the personality very similar, so I'm happy that worked out pretty well!!

Guh. I'm going to lunge through the computer screen and kiss your gorgeous face. That is a thing that is going to happen.
Look at this! It's...It's RUSTY. ;__; And everything genderbending should be, imho. It's such a great way to reexamine characters and you're doing it so right. <3

Also, hear hear! Body-type-spamming is the worst, man. I feel like comics have it the worst off (for both male and female, main and extra characters), but obviously TV and movies are rife with casts full of people who look suspiciously like they stepped out of a mold (especially the women. *sob*). Which makes VB all the cooler because it's such a goldmine of character variation. *_*

Anyway- this is a rad picture and you're the classiest, basically, is what I'm trying to say.

Thanks so much!! :>>>

I am glad you think it came out well...I had to do a lot of talking through the design with my room mate to make sure I got the feel and the look right. (we also spent a long time discussing how to genderbend other characters as well, because I'd like to continue this as a series of drawings!) Genderbending characters like this is just...way more fun than it should be honestly. XD
