Sooo...I had an idea with this...if Birth By Sleep had taken a different road and the characters weren't connected in such a CONFUSING way.

Four years ago, Vanitas was the original best friend of Aqua and Terra. But when Xehanort arrived to the Land of Departure with Ventus, Aqua and Terra began spending a lot more time with him, causing Vanitas to feel abandoned and alone. This is when Xehanort grasp the situation and convinces Vanitas that Aqua and Terra have replaced him with Ventus and if he opened himself to the darkness in his heart, Vanitas would be able to gain the power needed to eliminate Ventus and win Terra and Aqua back. Hoping this would be true, Vanitas chooses to do so and became Xehanort's student. Years later, Vanitas has continued training under Xehanort...but at this point, the darkness has complete control over him. The rest of the story plays out the same, as it does in the original BBS. However, Vanitas eventually betrays Xehanort, taking the lead of the TRUE antagonist of the entire series.

As for Terra, Aqua and Ventus' fate...they do not suffer, as they originally do. Thanks to a mysterious character with ties to Aqua, he finds a way to protect her, Terra and Ventus. He uses his Keyblade and locks their hearts on the Destiny Islands, preventing the trio from leaving. However, Vanitas is still on the loose, as the stranger sets out, in hopes of helping the boy and bringing him back home.
