Love her beautiful coloration, your work is improving greatly with the more art you do. Love how you have done the faded bckground with momma there it truly looks much like areal photo would. I use Photoshop CS3, so I'm not sure how to do roaning in other programs.
This is how I do it!-
I put down a single base color all over the horse (light gray for blue roan, cream/peach for red roan & light brown for bay roan).
I then take the speckle brush (size 24 or 27) and make it about 50px so that the brush kind of comes out blurry. Opacity is set to about 20, so nothing stands out too much.
Then I take a darker color first and speckle the legs, topline, underbelly, chest and by the head. After that, I take a medium tone and speckle the sides, flanks and shoulders. I then take a lighter color, set it to 30 opacity and create the highlights on the sides, rump, shoulder and neck.
When you're satisfied with that, take your dark base color (black, dark brown or chestnut) and color the head & lower legs. From there, you can add markings, highlights and shadows, etc all over the horse!
I hope that was clear enough! Alot of people have asked me, so I think I'll make a tutorial eventually.

Aww, what a cute foal! I love the composition of this picture. They way you have the foal in the middle of the picture, with the mother grazing off to the side in the distance, looks really good.
Your foal anatomy is really spot on!
Lovely picture, it's an instant favorite!

I'm alright with body proportion and all that, but I can't do facial expressions or angled poses to save my life. hahaha!
