Awesome picture for a powerful statement. Because of the purple and green colors it gets a larger distance to realitiy and a finer political note. With more rusty and natural tones, it would be mor brutal and stronger political i think. But that is the point the artist decides.

I always use rust and cracked paint as blood, scar and texture-effects. I've taken a lot of photos of rusted containers, degrading paint jobs and such. It's simple and effective.

Sometimes it's just all in the font. Try changing the font around, eventually it just hits you when you see the right font.
