NoreyDragon — Birth for death

Description I'm really disappointed. I worked very very hard on this one because I wanted to make a whole movie about Fatkit, the silver kit. But soon I noticed the limits of my traditional animations:
I always have to show a continuing action. I can not make one character lie still and the others move around him. I also can't make cats talking and moving her head while the body is still.
I ALWAYS have to move everythign in each frame, because otherwise it will look very unnatural and the movement will be gone.
This is very sad, and I'm frustrated now. I don't know what to do next...

This is Fatkit's death. The silver tabby mother dies, the brown father is angry and the kit is lost in the darkness. The golden she-cat is a medicine cat.
First I wanted to introduce them to you normally because I was really excited about my movie but I feel empty now.

I hate the jerky movement of the cats but I can't do anything about it - every change in the timeline makes the scene even more non-fluent or too fast to see what it's about. It's senseless.

Drawn with color pencils, 32 frames.

I've learned something: never try to animate 3 characters at the same time when using colored pencils -.-

No, it's Fatkit's birth but his mother died

Night-of-Mist [2011-04-22 21:23:15 +0000 UTC]

This is still good, all of your art is! Maybe you could make Fatkit part of the background, so he'd be perfectly still while the others move around him...? I dunno, I've never animated anything, so I'm not sure how everything works.

NoreyDragon In reply to Night-of-Mist [2011-04-22 21:50:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you're right - mistakes happen I still can look at this and see how much I have improved, and that makes me happy :3

That's good! I do the same thing, too, though I usually look at artwork that I made when I was three, so I'm always wondering how I could have possibly thought a blob of yellow wearing a dress was a human.

NoreyDragon In reply to Sauti-Alamisi [2011-02-21 19:10:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, sadly she did. I planned to make a full storyboard for this but somehow I gave the idea up ;D
I guess she just died because of inner injuries.

How often do you just try animating very basic things? What books do you have on animation?

I think, until you get very good at basic things like walk cycles and turnarounds, you're going to have a hugely difficult time trying to draw a scene like this in colored pencil. It's probably just as boring as learning anatomy, but equally as important. Don't underestimate the importance of thumbnails and story boards. Even for small things, they're helpful for maintaining consistency. I'm sorry I can't be of more help; I've only just started learning 2D in general, and haven't even touched traditional yet.

Don't take this the wrong way, because you're younger than me and already doing better than I am. I can't wait to see where you are a year from now--three years from now, even. Keep going--you have the passion!

NoreyDragon In reply to stoneclaw [2010-10-22 07:37:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot for your comment! Yes, it was wrong that I did not try walk cycles earlier But now I'm working on a project which includes all basics, etc.
Everything you see is self-taught - I don't have any books, I just sometimes look some tips up on the internet.

Cool Good luck on it! I can't wait to see. =]

I was going to recommend The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams, and some book or other by Eadweard Muybridge. The title eludes me, but it's full of all sorts of animals doing various walkings and runnings. Ridiculously helpful. I've also heard good things about The Illusion of Life, but I've never laid eyes on that book, so I can't have an opinion. =]

NoreyDragon In reply to stoneclaw [2010-10-22 16:45:36 +0000 UTC]

I have downloaded the Illusion of Life from Disney and I've browsed through it but did not really use it - it was interesting to read, though! Adn it's encouraging. A good book.
Ohhhhh walkings and runnings - that's what I need!!! *rushes off to type book's title in google*
Thank you!!

D: Disappointed? But-But this is awesome! I mean, I can't make traditional animations. Heck, I can barely make digital animations. I start animating and I usually give up after a week. I love your animations, it's always obvious that you always put a lot of hard work into it. You must have a ton of patience.

And this was pretty sad. Poor little Fatkit. And his mom. D:
