Well, the name stems from the word "Gherkin" which refers to a type of small cucumber/pickle. We just added "-trude" to the end to make it cuter and weirder.

This little gal has that effect on everyone. Nobody can resist her cuteness!
In fact, we took her in to the groomer the other day, and everyone was cooing and talking like a baby the moment they saw her!
Actually, poor Gherkin suffered a tragedy at that groomer last week. D: She apparently flinched while the groomer was shaving her (without the razor guard on the blade) and her leg was cut--twice. She had to be sent to the nearest vet for stitches, but she couldn't get in until later in the day. The poor thing had to sit in the kennels until they could find time for her. 
Anyway, speaking of cute dogs: As you know, my family has been looking for a new dog ever since we lost Fiona. (Gherkin needs a companion!)
Last Sunday we went to an animal shelter and found just about the perfect one! He even looks like our Fiona! We don't know exactly what breed he is, but he is about 15lbs, white and very scruffy.
We have him on a hold, as he has a vet appointment today. If he's doing alright tonight, we'll probably bring him home!

Thanks! Little Gherk should be getting her stitches out Friday or Saturday.
And so far things have not worked out with the new dog; the vet said it would not be a good thing to bring home a shelter dog while Gherkin is in a lowered state of health. It makes sense, as he has been exposed to a lot of diseases from the shelter.
We made sure Gherkin was up on her shots, so once her new immunizations kick in, and if Arthur is still at the shelter at that time, we'll bring him home.
