Over the top of the ridge came the large behemoth. Its gears and grating plates the only sound that filled the din. Below the bright red cloud that inflicted anyone who inhaled it with seizures, convulsions, followed by foaming at the mouth drifted silently towards the crashed car that the sergeantΒ had been chasing. The vehicle had entered the Hot Zone illegally and it was his duty to prevent anyone from getting past the gate. Somehow the driver had evaded the roadblocks and had led them on a two mile chase which had ended when the driver struck debris in the road.
From his position through the periscope, he could not tell if the driver was injured or before dying, managed to open his door in an effort to escape. He was not even sure if he was qualifiedΒ to venture outside his own vehicle to check to see if they were all right.Β
"My God," he whispered as the craft drew closer, it nearly entering the bright red circle of his missileΒ launcher.Β
"Sir?" his wing man, "What are your orders?"
But the sergeantΒ could not answer as the craft let out a loud rumbling alarm as it spotted them. It angled slowly, once again spraying its deadly red mist. Then hoarselyΒ as he prepared to back their vehicle up.
"May God have mercy on our souls..."
