Before Jude became an esk, he was an orphan.
Born to a Northern English family in the late 19th century, his life was supposed to be one of farm work and picnics, sprinkled with lackadaisical summers. However, at the age of six Jude's parents suffered from an untimely death, and their only child was sent to an orphanage. Emotional and unruly, the years that followed were spent jumping from institution to institution, until Jude became one of many British orphans to be shipped off to Australia.

Despite reassurances that he was being sent to a fine new facility, life in the new orphanage was far from paradise. The boy began to act out more than ever, and hardly fit in with the other children. However, there was one boy whom he idolised, and they soon became friends. Matthew was his name, and he promised Jude that somehow, they would find a way to escape.

A Walk in the Woods : Chapter 3The sun that had once welcomed him began to fade, retreating behind the ever-looming canopy. It shouldn’t have been a surprise that the light couldn’t last forever, but a part of Jude still felt betrayed, for he had trusted the forest to keep him warm and at ease. Following the wall had been an act of faith, in a way, and there was little to show for it–Jude didn’t feel tired, per se, but he was certainly bored, and almost wanted someone to bother him, if only to give him something new to think about.
Eventually, the little esk would get his wish. A light fog began to fall upon the outskirts of his view, clouding over either ends of the path, a mist that thickened the longer one tried to see through it. To a forest dweller, perhaps the change of weather was to be expected, but not for a creature who spent their days soaking up the desert sun. Jude twitched and shook out his fur when a chill trickled down his spine, and he glared at the wall beside him, as 18 GP
A Walk in the Woods : Chapter 4Jude didn’t know how long he stayed curled beside the gravestone, but for the first time in days, he drifted into the lightest layer of sleep. It was a dreamless state, and he still felt every soft brush of wind, tussling his fur as the world allowed him to rest undisturbed. Perhaps that in itself was a gift, even though he awoke with tears cradling his eyes. Gazing up at the increasingly familiar lettering, he still didn’t know what it was trying to convey, but another concept had came to him, one that was buried deep inside his heart–mother and father.
His tail lifted and dropped against the leaves, quietly trying to remember more, but even this much had been a series of revelations. Even if he’d never fully understand the force that had carried him here, or the information he’d unravelled, Jude could only hope that the experience would stay with him when he returned to the desert. As difficult as it was to face his past, perhaps it was inevitable. Stret 18 GP

A Walk in the Woods : Chapter 2Despite his initial suspicions, Jude had come to accept the forest as a sanctuary. Perhaps the conclusion was premature, but there was no denying the growing sense of peace in his heart, a tenderness that was rare enough to cling to. He could have surrendered the entire day to hiding in his leaf pile, silent as the world moved around him, but eventually the breeze took down the golden walls, scattering those makeshift bricks to the wind. With a shake of his fur and an internal sigh, Jude let it go, leaving what was left as his little shelter.
Continuing his journey through the strange wood, little paws pitter-pattered along countless twigs, snapping the nettles that threatened to poke him. The ground was so cluttered compared to his home of sand, where the dunes were comprised of identical grains, and if you studied one, the rest were the same. Here in the forest, every stone and patch of moss told a story, carrying a piece of the area’s history. How long had these trees g 18 GP

A Walk in the Woods : Chapter 1Night was a roar that brought with it darkness, a veil of shadow across Jude’s desert. The sand turned cold beneath his toes, and the rocky mountains might as well have been giants, for they blocked out the stars with their colossal silhouettes. They stood steady and tall as Jude scurried at their feet, weak and whimpering after running for hours. It was not his body that needed rest, it was his mind, and the fragile heart that rattled like a bird inside its cage. Such distress often came to him during sundown, for night was when he’d been abandoned, and there’d be no restful sleep for the soul of a Trespasser.
Ducking behind a moonlit boulder, Jude began his fitful digging, radiating ghostly wheezes as he trembled. It’d always been his way to channel stress, clawing his paws into the sand until he reached an impenetrable layer of dirt, but tonight it gave him no relief. Tears slipped from his unblinking eyes as he started another hole, desperate to find 18 GP
