Description Simba really got the shaft in SP, huh? Mufasa ain't gonna be tossing out wisdom during his nanna nap! Kion stubs his toe? Ole' granddaddy is there for him in a flash! Simba faces a real dilemma that could potentially put the Pridelands in jeopardy? BORING! You're on your own, asshole!

I know Mufasa was a great and popular character and all, but I do kind of wish they left him alone after the first one. Every time his ghost pops up all casual-like, I feel it takes away from the dramatic and unexpected majesty of the scene in the original. The Lion Guard is the worst offender, but Simba's Pride dipped its feet too far into this as well. Seeing Mufasa during 'He Lives in you' in SP, and in flashback/painting form in TLG was great, but they should have stopped there. He's dead, leave him be!

I want to state that I'm not bashing Lion Guard or Mufasa in this comic, although it seems like it. It's just something I thought about every time Mufasa pops up in an instant whenever his name is called in TLG.

I found this comic in my pictures folder half done for about 2 years, so I decided to finish it off finally!

I think I understand why Mufasa didn’t answer Simba when he asked him a question maybe it because he didn’t want Simba to judge for himself instead of asking Mufasa for the answer as king you sometimes have to do things your way or ask your subjects for help.

But with that logic, Mufasa should never have shown up to Simba as a ghost in the first film. And why is Kion exempt from this silence?

I've tried watching TLG but the bad animation and messed up continuity puts me off a bit. I still watch it occasionally, though.

YES Thank you for this!!! It has always annoyed me so much that Kion gets to talk to Mufasa whenever he wants to! What's the difference between him being alive or dead if you can get to talk to dead people whenever you want to ? Death doesn't work that way and to me it's even more annoying to see such a clumsy message in a kid's show!

Terrific Comic!

I don't think Simba got "shaffted", as you claim. Mufasa likely wanted to let Simba find the answers he sought himself because he knew that he could. Also keep in mind the fact that Kion is a child/teen in "The Lion Guard" (not an adult like Simba was in SP) and faced with exceptional responsibilities and challenges, making Mufasa's offering continued advice and guidance to him understandable.

Oh my, I totally agree with this. I understand grandparents tent to get more attached to their grandkids, though I don’t think they love them more, just differently. But they can’t forget that no matter how much they love and favor their grandchildren, it is their OWN children who need them the most and in this case in particular it’s even more obvious.

Poor Simba had it really bad seeing his father fall to his death and growing up feeling guilty about it. Kion instead had a happy childhood, the worst thing that happened to him was getting bitten by Ushari and not only he got cured, but he was older when it happened. Simba needed Mufasa much more than Kion did while growing up.

Though, I think the real reason for Mufasa appearing so often in TLG have more to do with bad writting. Or if wanting an in-universe explanation, Kion may simply have an ability to communicate with the dead that Simba doesn’t. Notice that the times Simba talked to Mufasa’s spirit he had either Rafiki or Kion with him to make the “connection”. So, maybe?

I kinda just chalk it up to perhaps he's not really appearing, more like Simba/Kion's imaginations or consciousness. Children tend to have better imaginations and that could be why he "appears" to Kion more. Same with why Rani's parents appeared when she called them in the same way as Kion.

Mufasa is a grandfather, they tend to favor the grandkids more than their children. Keeping his place up in the good place and all by being there for Kion. XD

Could always take it as Mufasa had already taught Simba everything but Simba's trauma wiped him of most of the lessons and his anger towards his dad is stopping them. Half of SP Mufasa is yelled at by someone while TLK 1 Simba yells at him he was never there. Simba's a lot more bratty towards his dad until TLG which we didn't focus on him.

For all we know the entire Kion absence Simba was sitting around going "you did this, dad, you encouraged him!" all angry and huffy. Mufasa wasn't needed in any of the scenes honestly, the ghost scene was added for many reasons, but the reflection in the water glowing would have worked fine on its own. They just really liked that stuff from other shows and put it in to give the VA more lines in the movie, I bet.

I guess you could make the claim that Mufasa felt Kion, being young and easily manipulated by Scar, needed more help and guidance than Simba, who was an adult and had experience? Or you could say that, because Kion could use the Roar he could communicate easier with Mufassa, but I think the film writers need to clear this up.

Well Mufasa did have another line in TLK2, but for some reason they scrapped it: youtu.be/QcRfNBWbfOI?t=57s

I guess Disney felt that Mufasa's line wasn't necessary, but it felt like it had a lot of meaning. It would have been interesting to see that deleted scene with that line.

Aw man! Why did they cut that?! Maybe during the very scene I'm referring to in the comic, Mufasa DID talk to Simba. Maybe it was too expensive to animate so they cut it?

Mytokyokitty In reply to NostalgicChills [2019-09-21 18:39:41 +0000 UTC]

Not sure why they would do that

It probably was too expensive or was just a last minute thing to scrap because it wasn't fitting in well with the movie or something.

Given they reused the animation for Kovu's sigh - both in the scene where he's monologue-ing on Priderock and when he sees Zira fall to her death (seriously, they line up perfectly!), I'm going to guess that budget was a serious issue for this movie. So, I'm opting that it was too expensive too.
