Description 'They Live In You. They Live In Me.'

Seeing this film from start to finish yesterday made me realise something, this beautiful film still stands the test of time, well for me anyway. I don't know whether i was just in a weird mood or what, but it still made me cry! I'm turning twenty this year, i've been watching this film since i was four, no other film can send such shivers down my spine, make me close my eyes and drift me back to a simpler time.
As a child, you love this film for it's bright colors, fun characters, catchy songs and cartoon look. But as you grow older, you begin to appreciate the deeper details. Such as the score, the art, the skilled animation, the story, the very heart and soul that Disney put in this movie...this is what makes a great film! It thrills me, but it also makes me sad, knowing that Disney has pretty much given up on 2D animation, turning its back on what made them such a great company. Nowadays, they mostly do live action movies, invest in the new shitty Disney channel, and doing often horrible, unnecessary sequels to their great films rather than making new ones. The new generation may never feel what we felt as children as we sat down and watched these gorgeous films. I don't know about you, but i'm going to make sure that my children grow up watching the classic Disney movies. No 'Hannah Montana' shit for them!

If you're wondering why this picture looks kind of familiar, it's because this is a redo of the cover on the classic Lion King storybook from 1994 by Mouseworks. Or this one if you don't know what the hell i'm talking about: farm4.static.flickr.com/3175/2…
I decided to redo it; not because i hate the original cover, but because i just wanted a challenge. I love this particular storybook, i've had mine for as long as i can remember, it in fact helped me draw the characters. So i thought i'd pay a homage to another childhood 'friend'. Basically i just changed the characters expressions, fixed their color palette, changed the time of day and added some lighting and shades. But geez, this one took me a while! I'm not crazy about how Nala turned out; but overall i'm pretty happy with it

This is really nice!

I'm just going to say this: The fact that The Lion King is somewhat like Kimba the White Lion, THEY PRACTICALLY SHARE THE SAME STORY!!! Plus, it's not a rip off! In the kimba series, it featured humans! But in the lion king, it does not.

I much agree with your points.
The Lion King and others are child-friendly. I loved the movie as a kid. Now that I'm an adult, I see the emotion in the characters. I love Simba because of how I relate to him, and for his heart.

!!!! I watched it from start to finish yesterday too! As well as the Hunchback of Notre Dame. I'm watching it again right now. The music is great, and Esmerelda is so pretty. Laverne and Djali are my favorites.

Anyway...the piece is amazing. Your use of color is great. I know you weren't asking for feedback, but Mufasa's muzzle just seems to curve downward a little bit too much. A little too long. But other than that, it's brilliant!

wow! we seem to be quite in sync don't we? XD i watched 'Hunchback' for the first time in decades only a few months ago. I forgot how dark it was for a Disney film, being about genocide, having very heavy religious references, a burning at the stake, panhandling, prejudice on deformity. It was a great film, but damn! that's a kid's movie??

LunarShadowCreations In reply to NostalgicChills [2013-04-12 14:20:04 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it was VERY intense for a kid's movie. I was quite stunned by just how dark it was. Definately lives up to the line "Who is the monster and who is the man?" And let me tell you: It's kinda wacky just how in sync we are. XD

I know exactly what you mean, The Lion King is the only movie that I love just as much now, going on 19, as I did when I watched it at the age of 4 or 5.
The music is incredible, the story is much deeper than one might expect, and the animation is amazing. Now and always, it's one of my favorite movies.

You did very great on this picture, it's beautiful... And your explaining of how much this movie meant to you sounds very genuine. I will admit, I haven't actually seen "The Lion King" until recently (and I'm only a few years away from becoming an adult), but I did really enjoy it!~

Amen to that! I've always loved Lion King and I've actually got a bit of a collection going on that i've had since a wee Foxen .. I was watching Recess: Schools out and they did an add for the Disney channel in 2000 or 1999 and they used to have this thing called "Toon Disney" where it had all of the cool old diney cartoons and it made me wonder what happened and why disney lost their touch >.> .. aside from all of that.. You're a very good artist and I wish I could paint as well as you xDD

I agree with you about the direction that disney is going in (Bad hannah Montana bad) . Bit lucky however there still is a little hope, Have you seen Disney's short "Paperman"? It really good !! [link] .

NostalgicChills In reply to CylindricalFawn [2013-04-12 05:54:12 +0000 UTC]

i have seen 'Paperman' and it was really good! Disney still has its heart and soul in 2D animation, i just don't understand why they can't go back and make more like that. I know they had a cold run of 'bad,' unpopular movies, but sometimes that's just what happens, you have a bad run for a while; but then you can make it big! it all about perseverance, and Disney lost theirs, they gave up. Now the new generation is doomed to suffer the consequences, unless something changes

I remember that book cover well! I always loved the fact that Nala had whiskers on it (I know, I know - in TLK's art style only the males have whiskers but the nerd in me - even as a kid - always thought that was weird. All felines have whiskers, no matter their gender! ) Whiskers or not this looks fantastic! I totally agree with you about the downfall of Disney, too. I'm never going to have kids but if I did I'd make sure they grew up on the classics too. The stuff Disney spews out these days is just sad...I'm just glad they brought TLK back to theaters for a new generation to appreciate on the big screen (and for us "old folk" to take a much appreciated trip down memory lane...the experience of seeing it in theaters again was so nostalgic for me! ) When I was a kid this movie was one of my major inspirations, it made me want to draw more and dream of doing animation...sadly it seems like the kind of animation I'd want to do is a thing of the past. I have no interest in CGI animation...to me, it lacks in emotion and heart...that special kind of magic that only hand drawn has.

NostalgicChills In reply to SocksTheMutt [2013-04-12 05:40:04 +0000 UTC]

lol really? it always bothered me that Nala had whiskers, but then again i was always more of a Lion King nerd than a feline nerd XD I'm not proud of this but, i actually used to think that female lions didn't have whiskers thanks to TLK, i was such an idiot
And i too was thrilled to see Lion King in theatres, i was too young to see it when it originally came out. I saw it three times those few weeks it was released in 3D. The 3D didn't really add much, i mostly loved the huge screen and surround sound. Although noisy kids kind of ruined it a few times, oh well it was still awesome!
And YES Lion King inspired me to draw too! I had the same dream too at the time to work at the Disney studio. But alas Disney's downfall has crushed that. However, maybe you and i could rebuild the Disney company and restore its integrity. Make tham go back to doing 2D animated films, remind them of their roots. Bring back the magic!!

Great redo of the story book cover! Nala had whiskers on the cover too which is odd. The females don't have whiskers just the males. I've loved The Lion King since the age of two, and still love it to this day I'm 20 this year. It's just a timeless memorable classic which I will always love forever. Just yesterday I found out Simba has a lost cousin named Mtoto one of Sarabi's sisters cubs. Yeah, they basically bring out awful channels on Disney along with films, I suppose they're running out of ideas maybe. My younger siblings are addicted to the Disney channel now but it just makes me think what complete stupidity.

Actually, Nala has taken on a more mischievous look -- something that was explored moreso in the Broadway version, than in the movie. So she looks pretty good, from where I'm standing -- er, sitting/lying!!
Keep up the good work, mate!
