Hi Robin, I quite like a couple of your flower images, for me it's colour and pattern that come to mind...
I was drawn to this one first, by the colour and I was thinking how great it would look if it was sitting next to a cerelean blue.. I really like the texture in the middle of the flower as it appears to be more thicker and fuller with slightly more depth.. Where as the petals on the outer seem more thinner and loose, and almost look like they have holes in them.
For me, this is one of those images I could glance at and appreciate it for what it is in the moment, where as their are other images I could stare at for hours, and have different thoughts about..

Well done photo...good clarity, color and composition. You say you're not happy with your results...what lens are you using for your macro work? The camera itself is plenty good for whatever, so that leaves two things...the lens and the operator. I can tell from your gallery that you have a grasp, which leaves the lens.

Thanks for the kind comment.
The lens I'm using is an EFS 17-85mm USM IS, so it's not a dedicated macro lens. This one came out pretty well considering, but I'd like to get in that little bit closer.
I suspect that part of my problem may lie in the fact that I got used to the supermacro feature on my Powershot Pro1, which allows you to creep up to within a couple of centimetres of your target (so all my insect shots have required a certain amount of patience and stealthy moves!). There are, of course, advantages to this, but the camera is nowhere near as good as the 20D, as you suggest.
I got some macro extension rings for the 20D to try and recreate this, but I find that focussing precisely on anything which moves (like outside when there is a breeze) is a real pain, and I don't really have enough control over dof for my liking.
So I'm guessing that my problem is in two parts: firstly that I need to step away from the subject a little, quite literally, and secondly that a decent dedicated lens would be better suited to my purposes.
Please excuse the lengthy reply, but I'm trying to think it through, and your suggestions have been most welcome and given me cause to consider.

Got it. It's exactly my issue right now, too. I have three lens...a 35mm f1.4 prime, an 85mm f1.2 prime and a cheapie Sigma 28-300mm telezoom macro (which is a bad lens, btw - I'm told the 70-300 is good, but not this one). For my closeup work I'm still using my point and shoot Olympus SP510UZ, which has a macro ability similar to your Pro1. I'm drooling over either the Canon 100mm Macro or the Canon 180mm macro. Sigma also offers what is rated as a good 180mm macro lens as well. We'll see...it will be awhile before any of that happens!
