Description A charcoal drawing that took a very very very long time. 10 hours straight or some such. There was no sleeping from start to finish which made me a very smudgy girl at work the next day. It's probably the best thing I've ever done. It's certainly the only one I've framed. I'd like to go back and take the picture again so it can actually be viewed in all of it's incredible detail.
I shall pondee the irony of the world's worst photgraphers best work being of a photographer some other day.

That is amazing. I love the detail, and the angle, and the composition. It's beautiful. I love the eyes especially I think.

Thanks. I always thought the eyes were a little bit flat, but I'm really glad to hear you like them

Fantastic use of media. Your shadows are strong and your highlights are impressive. The composition itself is well placed, it's balanced and pleasing to the eye. I like your choice to blur certain bits, it adds depth and personality.

My only question is that it looks as if you've used a lighting flare filter near his right thigh? I think it would be a much more powerful image if you toned it down a little, if only because it seems a little bit of a distraction at present.

'sides that, awesome job. :D

not-sleeping In reply to limnides [2008-02-29 05:36:22 +0000 UTC]

Heh heh.. That is not a filter. It's a real lens flare. The picture is frame and I'm a very bad photographer. Some day, in the never never, I will retake this photo and do this piece justice.

Thanks for the great comment.

2 hours??? It would've taken me that long to do the face, and I'd have done it much worse than you... Nice composition and excellent textures for the clothing and hair. I think the background could be better, if it's meant to blurred from focusing on the photographer I think some bits should be more blurred, if it's meant to be in focus some bits are a little too blurred. Meh, I don't know. I think the shading on the bag (I think it's a bag but I can't tell... the thing on the floor next to him) seems a little dark, unless it's meant to have stains on it or something... Oh, and the hands and camera are incredible, amazing job with those.

Lighting sources are captured masterfully and for a medium that’s notorious for smudging, I find that its incredible you didn’t wreck everything by adding so a well executed background.

Conversely

Get rid of that lense flare before I have an epileptic seizure. It RUINS everything and cheapens the image.

Thank you I'm fond of this piece as well, though to be honest I've done it so long ago that I'm almost getting tired of it I haven't been able to get back to that really intense sustained mindset for ages so everything in my gallery feels a bit rushed in comparison. Ah well..
