Description
A love comparing to Romeo and Juliet is what you and Kaneki had. Unheard of and bound to end in disaster. Not only were you a human, but you were a part of the CCG as well. Not only was he a ghoul, but he was the one and only Eyepatch. Neither of you had told the other about who you really were, as far as the other should know, you were human. However, it was hard to hide your true callings. Though it was never outwardly stated, you both knew. This was not going to end with a happy ever after. You knew it was going to end in death, whether it be you or him. It bothered you endlessly. It was always there in the back of your mind no matter what you did.
Eating? It was there. Working? There it was. Sleeping? You had nightmares. There was only one escape you ever had. There was a single way you could forget about your fate, if only for a while. And that was when you were with him. With a single glance, the tiniest of smiles, your fears melted away. However, lately, it had kept finding its way back to you. You were never safe from your own mind, even in your safe haven. Head hanging, grasp tightening on the cup of coffee you held, you felt rage swell within you. You just wanted to be happy, where was the crime in that? What was wrong with hoping for a happy ending in this messed up world? Knowing your happiness, your one light, had futile chance of surviving made you angrier by the minute. It put the bitterest taste in your mouth. It felt as if you were falling deeper and deeper into some dark pit. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair.
"IT'S NOT FAIR!" you scream, throwing your cup on the ground as your chair falls back with a clatter. The shatter echoed through the dim, empty café. No one besides you and Kaneki were there. Kaneki's eyes had widened at your sudden outburst, staring at you with worry glinting in his eyes. He thought of what to do as he watched you closely. You were shaking, head still hanging low with your hair covering your face. Your breathing was heavy, and you feared he could hear your heart hammering in your chest. You're so embarrassing, you thought to yourself. Get a hold of yourself. Throw your fit when your alone, anywhere but in front of him. Tears stung your eyes as a sob built up in your throat. Your body was racked with silent sobs. Slowly, your arms came to pull at your hair as you fell to your knees.
"I-it's not fair..." you whispered to yourself. You screwed your eyes shut, wishing it all away. Suddenly, arms found their way around you. One wraps itself around your shoulders, the other gently petting your hair. Your eyes widen as you lean into his touch. "K-Kaneki..." you choke out.
"It's going to be okay, (Y/N). We'll find a way," he whispers softly. Your eyes fall shut as you freely cry into his chest. Your arms embrace him tightly, feeling safer than you've ever been. Quietly, he whispers sweet nothings to you. Keeping your head on his chest, you focus on the steadiness of his heartbeat. Soon, your short, quick breaths slowed to meet the same steadiness of his heart. It felt as if the anger and sadness had fled your body when confronted with his warmth and love. Your crying had stopped after a short while of staying in his arms. Slowly, you pull back, looking into his grey eyes.
"Promise?" you quietly ask. A kind smile spreads across his face as he stares into your (e/c) orbs. "Promise," he reassures genuinely. A small smile worms its way onto your tear stained face. Even after years of knowing you, and months of dating you, it still causes a warm feeling in the pit of his stomach. It felt like a pleasant fire had been lit inside him as he pulls you close once again.
"I love you," he whispers in the silent room after a few moments.
His face was cherry red as he said this, but he knew he meant it. Not wanting to pull away from his soft embrace, a goofy grin forms at his words. You could hear his heart hammering in his chest at the proclamation.
"I love you too, Kaneki," you respond quietly. Relief washes over him at yours words, now knowing his feelings were returned. It was the first time you had ever said it and meant it in a romantic way. He buries his head in your hair rather than responding to you. You two sat silently in each others arms in the dimly lit, empty café.
Needless to say, Kaneki always tried to keep his promise. Even if he failed in the end...
