wow that first line in your comment section literately broke my heart. Like. Totally. I missed it the first time I read this comic, but, wow. Wasn't expecting that. I think I'm going to go cry now.

You know Anders has a hole hollowed out in a stack of "manifestos" for his vicodin. That's why he puts copies of the manifesto everywhere, so that no one will want to touch that pile!

Gack! Anders is so scary here! It's the cheekbones... So gaunt and haggard!
Anyway, amazing work, as always. I particularly like how Merrill looks a bit more mature (which she would be, by that point).

Thank you very much! I was trying to make Anders and Merrill both look more "Act III"-y... older and a bit less 'smooth'. It didn't totally work out like I wanted, but at the same time, it was good practice for next time. I especially need to draw Anders more. He's a good character too, just not the one I chose for Hawke!

Well, it's probably the face shape... but I wanted a Bethany who looks more like a sister to my Hawke. (I wanted them to fit together, stylistically.) It does mean she got a stronger jaw/face though....
The Codex talks a lot about why there are so many blood mages/demons in Kirkwall (as does the evil tomes quest, a little bit). Apparently it's because so much blood magic was used there and so many slaves died, it weakened the barrier between the Fade and the normal world. More of that info should have been in the game dialogue, though, not just the codex!
And no, you're not told why Malcolm is dead. I wondered that too! At the same time, it's a bit more interesting to decide for yourself what happened to him.

Yeah, it's so sad! Even the ones trying to do good end up doing more evil.... Merrill's might be the saddest, I think.

Poor Anders. Poor Merrill! This page reminds me of just how messed up every mage you meet is. Even the ones from the side quests - blood mages, helpless apostates, and headcases all. Damn. Looking forward to the next page!

Yeah, I get that they were trying to make it a little more complicated than "waahh wahhh poor mages and the big bad Templars" but they ended up overcompensating.... There aren't many good mages at all!
Next page I can get back to characters I like drawing more, haha. I have no problems with these people but I think Orsino is the only one I have any real interest in drawing. I guess Anders too, but if I drew him again, I'd want it to be more angsty. (Angst is fun!)

I agree. I think in an effort to make it hard to see mages as merely victims they landed a little too firmly on the "mages are all kinds of messed up" side.

This really hit hard in the Act III "Best Served Cold" quest where some blood mages WHOM I HAD SAVED come back to wreck up my shit. What the ffff?

I ran into the same thing the first time through. I was like, WTF?!?!? They make sure you get royally screwed by magic at every turn. Test your resolve and all that. Suffice to say, I thoroughly enjoyed my second playthru as pro-Templar.

I've played the pro-Templar ending a few times (including on playthroughs where my primary ending was pro-Mage, since seriously, save and reload! A great thing about games) and honestly, in a lot of ways, it seems pretty reasonable from Hawke's point of view. I just wish it were more interesting if you were also a mage, since you can even legitimize that with self-loathing. I mean, seriously. Almost EVERY mage you meet is mindlessly evil or tries to kill you for almost no reason.

Yeah, it was surprisingly hard to list off the good mages Hawke knows. Thankfully I set this before Merril's last quest or I'd have even fewer....
I'm still annoyed Orsino went bad. He really didn't have to be, and we didn't have enough good mages in the game, much less developed characters like him.

Maybe he's been distracted by how CRAZY BAD he wants Hawke. Because no matter who you play, no matter what you do, Anders would give anything to latch onto your face. Poor guy, I'd like to give you a chance, but--!

Thanks! I think Merrill will look most different when I draw her again. Anders is not yet right, but he's not horribly far off (for an Act III Anders) in my imagination. Merrill though... bleck. The problem with Merrill is I think she looks too much like a doll in the game... when I draw her, I want her to look more like a person. It's hard though!

Oops, just forgot to link page 17 as well. (I normally go to the most recent submission and copy the list of links, but I have to add the link for THAT deviation too!)
As for Anders... I was kind of surprised his appearance doesn't change more over the years, you know? In my mind's eye, by the end, he's a total wreck. Justice runs him absolutely ragged, after all. They could have at least given him darker circles around his eyes during the different Acts, yeah? As it stands, he doesn't look quite pitiful enough by the end!
And thanks again . I wanted them organized as companions/friends/family, but dividing the page into three sections each with space for two people in a somewhat original way (especially taking into account my other layouts--don't want to be repeating them) was tricky! Malcolm was also hard since I didn't want to show -him- at all, since don't know what he looks like.
As for the Warden... well, I used a Dalish warden, so it wasn't a problem in that respect. I doubt Hawke's really had any contact with his cousin, if that cousin still exists and just isn't the Warden though... or didn't die in the big mage tower conflict. Don't want to draw attention to yourself when you're an apostate! I wonder what they'd even write about?

Right, 17 was the color-y one. How'd I forget that? Honestly, I swear my brain doesn't exist sometimes...
About Amell, well, that was just an idle thought. Since Hawke is related to him/her and whatnot - regardless of Hero status - makes me wonder what Amell is/was like and where he/she fits on the whole spectrum is all. Would Amell about prove Fenris right about magic being evil, or set the cranky elf back on his heels yet again like your Hawke did...?
And then that line of thought leads to what Hawke and Fenris would have thought about Anders had they met him back in Awakenings, when Justice was a seperate entity and Anders was still fun. What if, what if, what if, right?

Except in those rare moments when Awakenings-Anders was completely serious, such as that heartbreaking conversation next to the tree in Amaranthine. And that would have been before Anders was possessed, at any rate. I'm not saying they would have gotten along, but... And they could have met Justice back when he was nice. Now him, I think Fenris would have gotten along with up to a point. To a point. Except Justice of the past would have pointed out EVERY injustice - only half of which Fenris even believes exist.
