Famed artist Sargent Johnson lived in the Bay Area for over 50 years. Influenced by the Negro Renaissance of 1920’’s, Johnson’’s subject material originally focused on racial identity. He later became known as an acclaimed modernist. San Francisco is dotted with his public artwork, some pieces on view include: Mosaics and reliefs on the facade of the San Francisco Maritime Museum at Fort Mason, 900 Beach Street.

* Concrete wall frieze for the George Washington High School Athletic Field, 600 32nd Avenue.
* The “Fillmore War God,” Johnson’’s last large sculpture, at Webster Street and Golden Gate Avenue, across from the Ella Hill Hutch Recreation Center."
