Description Tawuse Melek (aka Melek Taus), the Peacock Angel. He is the central figure of the Yazidi faith. According to their belief, Tawuse Melek was an angel who fell from grace but redeemed himself and became a demiurge who created the cosmos from the cosmic egg. After he repented, he wept for 7,000 years, his tears filling seven jars which then quenched the fires of hell. The Yazidis have been accused by Muslims of devil worship, due to the fact that Tawuse Melek is referred to as Shaitan and the account of him refusing to bow to Adam, but the Yazidis do not consider Tawuse Melek a devil, a still fallen angel, or a source of evil, rather they consider him the leader of the archangels and an emanation of God. Interestingly enough, the Yazidis actually respect Tawuse Melek for refusing to bow to Adam, whereas Muslims condemn Shaitan for his refusal. No evidence has been found for any connection between Tawuse Melek and the Islamic Shaitan, but the Yazidis forbid use of the the word Shaitan because of the misunderstanding and the persecution it has led to.
