Description Tried to play around with lighting. Not sure how it ended up. You tell me.

Photoshop CS4, didn't track time, probably 4 hours or so.

First of all, I think you did a nice job with the contrasts, you could have made some stronger white highlights on her skin still and especially around the outline of her face, hair and body. It looks a bit as if you used a number of weaker light sources allover the place in front of her. I would suggest looking at some concert photos with similar light and trying to make quick sketches of those and learn how the light "reacts" e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Next, I really love how you made the microphone, it looks great, and the handle of it helps to lead the viewers' eyes up towards the lady's face. Very good example of good composition e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> You allover made the picture look realistic with the little wrinkles on the gloves, and the few stray hairs on top of her head.

You could practice proportion and anatomy still though, making lots and lots of sketches is the answer! Look around for a cheap anatomy book and start drawing poses/body parts and then use the "peeled" pictures of muscles and bones to imagine how it all looks with skin on e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/> I find this more helpful than looking at the complete sketches that can be found in those books.
What you need to practice in particular are the facial proportions and the muscles and tendons of the neck and shoulders.
There are a few mistakes lots and lots of people make when drawing shoulders. The most prominent one being the shoulder bones, many people draw them like slits or just lines on the shoulder without trying to make it look like a protruding bone, I assume this is connected with the way anime and manga artists draw. Here's a picture of the musculature of the shoulders and neck: [link] , note how the neck muscles seem attached to the clavicle and try to draw this in your pictures and sketches. It can be done easiest and turn out most naturally if you show them just with some light shading and texture rather than lines.

About the face, some things (like the eyes, lips and nose) are a bit on the wrong place. If I cover the mouth and her left eye, the head suggests more of a semi-profile than a full profile, while her eye and lips suggest that it's a full profile. You need to move these further towards the back of her head, they need to be closer to her ear. Again, making a bunch of sketches and looking at references will help you get used to this e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>
I have collected loads of tutorials on the subject of facial proportion, and I suggest you take a look at these:
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Black"/> [link] - this one has a small chapter on facial proportion, but is full of useful advice on shading, coloring and textures.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Black"/> [link] - this is supposed to be about manga faces, but it uses really realistic proportions when building them, particularly the "older people" section, please have a look.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Black"/> [link] - this is specifically for lips, and it's one of my favorite tutorials ever. I bet you'll find it helpful e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Black"/> & [link] - these are both for hair, made traditionally but the techniques can easily be used in digital artwork or any other medium.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="10" height="10" alt="" title="Bullet; Black"/> [link] - in case you're not entirely comfortable/familiar with this way of building up a pose, this tutorial might help.

Hope this wasn't too much of an agony to read and that it helped at least a bit. Keep up the great work, and have fun! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thanks indeed, very useful. I'm a bit confused though since I did use a small reference for the face. However, I'm grateful for the time you spent giving me good advice.

Cheers.

Even with references the proportions can be wrong if you haven't learned how to measure them, it's more important knowing what you draw rather than seeing

Nicely done! I really like how everything blends together to give a very smooth effect. There is something off though, perhaps something to do with the lips or eyes, not very sure, I can't place my finger on it...
On the whole it's a good job

Thank you. I have been pointed at that exact thing indeed. The weird thins is I used a ref, so I'm not sure what I did that made it look weird. Ah, anyway, glad you like it.
