My headcanon is that the fishtrolls have fish-scale backs, for no other reason that it's pretty and fun to paint.

Ah, sorry for the late replay!
I use paintool SAI with the pen tool, usually at around ~65% opacity on the second-hardest setting to do pieces like this. I don't really do lines traditionally, though - I prefer to paint solid colors then add in blocks of color to "sculpt" whatever I'm rendering, if that makes sense.

This is beautiful. This is SO beautiful. The framing is perfect, the colors are great and I'm kinda crazy about their hair. Faces are tough to draw from that angle and I really admire your ability to get so much expression into them.
It makes me sad that Eridan turned out to be such a d-bag in the comic because I think this redeemed him for me. : (

This picture really hit me deep. I cant understand why, but somehow, i just cant stop staring at it.
As a start this is an amazing art that really takes the viewers to stop and take a better look at it closely with its details and design, I love it!
The use of a glamorous picture frame indicates its importance of the moment. The slight hanging of the sleeve has something to do with role playing gone bad.
Feferi's wiping his wounded back, while trying to scold him out of his senses. Her face expresses a heavy emotion of worry mixed with anger; as Morails, I believe she has the rights to do so. She continues to wipe his wounds, cuz as her morail, she cares for him, dispite of the great mixed emotions she's feeling.
But on the Eridan's side, its another story. His expressions are mixed both satisfaction and regret. He craves for a moment like this for her to take care for him and be there when he needs her the most. But then he has to pay the price, he regrets about his action of gambling at the situations which chances of him getting hurt is high.
As sad as it seems he did not expect Feferi would be soo angry about it, which make all his expectations and sacrifice a bit wasted.
Even though everything didnt turned out right what he expected, even though the cost over-weighs the prize... he is satisfied. He got what he always wanted. She is with him and she takes care of him.
As for his record, that's the only counts, no matter what.
Rendering the Title: "Diamonds" meaning one of the most special moments of Eridan fit in perfectly in its place.

I'm not going to confirm or deny anything you said here. I like people coming away from what I produce with their own ideas and interpretations, but it makes me so happy that a lot of the intended story in the scene I set up came through. It's incredibly flattering that this piece hit you deeply, and I want to thank you for your kind words.
I will add, however: "Diamonds" is sort of a double reference - you caught the human implication of value and importance, but it's also the symbol for moiraillegence.

STILL CAN'T GET OVER IT. This is so gorgeous, you have no idea. The fish scales are so beautiful, and the way they're reflecting the light is just so pretty to look at.
