Yesterday was the 1st day of the Bengali New Year (Pohela Boishakh) so I wanted to paint something to commemorate the occasion This is my OC Rupali and last year too I painted her for Bengali New Year's. However, this time I thought I'd go for a more contemporary modern look instead of a traditional one You can view last year's painting here: www.deviantart.com/noxmoony/ar…
She's holding a little sugar elephant - a kind of "চিনির সাজ" (chinir shaaj) which is a type of candy that is usually sold around all the festivals and fairs that pop up around this time. There are craftsmen who specialise in making various types of these treats and they all look super cute. You can view some here and here . It's just made of plain sugar but they come in a variety of shapes - horses, peacocks, elephants, tigers, fish, etc. I have fond memories of going to the fairs and trying my best to finish off one of these sugar candies
Due to covid I haven't really gone out during this special occasion for the last two years, so making paintings incorporating elements from it brings back a lot of fond memories and feels like a sort of celebration of something so quintessential to Bengali culture
I also used red and white throughout the painting as these are the colours typically associated with this day. People usually dress up in outfits decked in red and white on Bengali New Year's. It's kinda fun to see a whole mass of people in reds and whites
Last but not least I featured one of my favourite local flowers - Kadam , otherwise known as Neolamarckia cadamba or Burflower.
This was a really special painting to make and I enjoyed every minute of it. Been so stressed with work lately that it was a welcome respite
Done in Photoshop CS6 with an intuos pro. Took around 4 hours
Thanks for looking,
Ciao for now!
