Description (This is fan art and I am okay with that. It happens sometimes. Bear with me, here.)

My favorite character from my favorite book: John Childermass.

“Childermass knew what games the children on street-corners were playing –games that all other grown-ups have long since forgotten. Childermass knew what old people by firesides are thinking of, though no one had asked them in years. Childermass knew what young men hear in the rattling of drums and the tooting of the pipes that make them leave their homes and go to be soldiers –and he knew the half-eggcupful of glory and the barrelful of misery that await them. Childermass could look at a smart attorney in the street and tell you what he had in his coat-tail pockets. And all that Childermass knew made him smile; and some of what he knew made him laugh out loud; and none of what he knew wrung from him so much as a ha’pennyworth of pity.”
- P.42 Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, by Susana Clarke

I have always wanted to draw him. I've tried many times and failed. I had challenge in #Read-It-Draw-It to push me to it this time and here he is.

And this is kind of for *DayLight13 as well. She was kind enough to geek-out with me about it. And I can *always* geek-out about this book.

When I first read the book I was stunned. It was like my John staring out at me. What is it about badass dudes (most who are taciturn and wear black) named John? Think about it ... there really are a lot of them. I think it's because that kind of a character is an archetype. My second-favorite archetype, as a matter of fact. Childermass, in particular, is my hero. (Much to my relief, as I read, I found some very stark differences.)

blah, blah, blah ... it is *so* bedtime now

I wish he and the Gentleman with the Thistledown Hair could have gotten together for something. It would have been an encounter of epic proportions

That would have been something, but I can't help but think one of them would come out of it a little worse for wear ... and I am not sure who.

Thanks!

I really really like this interpretation - simple but very effective, and with an absolutely wonderful expression. I tip my hat to you, most definitely.

(Also, am very glad to know I'm not the only one who has a somewhat Childermass-like character around the place)

What a delightfully devious smirk! I love how the tarot cards in the background tell about the character. You are always so good at incorporating themes into your art!

Sometimes, we have to afford ourselves a little bit of sanity and draw fanart. ;D It keeps us well-rounded!

I should do more of it ... but I'm a fan of such obscure things. Oh well.

But I may do more Childermass. He is my most favorite ever. *sigh* Nothing like a really smart hot guy in black.

The tarot cards were good practice. I have been thinking of drawing my own ...

Thanks!

Brown and black work really well together here, and I am normally not at all fond of them in combination. The background's very simple, but it's lovely, and gives a feeling of movement even though it's stationary. And the odd piece of fanart is never a bad thing! I own that book, actually, but have not yet read it. It's too heavy to be my handbag book, sadly!

I went back and forth on the background color. But in the end, I am very glad it worked. Anything else didn't fit the character.

It's a recommended read. Kinda' slow in the beginning, but well worth it.

...Seconding, thirding, whatever, the motion for "oooh, his smirk!" I really, really need to read this book.

Man do I love his smirk! This is wonderful and I really like the background.

I haven't had a chance to read this book yet (it's on my list) I know my hubby really enjoyed it though.

It's my favorite book ... so far. I hear the next one may have more Childermass in it, which will probably make me like it more.

I had a ton of fun making my own tarot card.
