Description EDIT* Screwed with the background until I actually liked it.*

This is how I deal with art block: I go back into all the bullcrap sketches and failed art and pay particular attention to the last successful sketch. Then I look at them and remember which one was the most fun and I develop it into something. Generally that loosens things. In the case of this one, it was actually clogging my system and I had to get it out of my head. That's my remedy for it ... even though it only works about half the time ... but hey, it's something to try.

As the creative worlds in my house merge, I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go back through the archives and dig up a lot of old and mostly-forgotten things. The recent subject has been alien races fit to integrate to the larger universe.

Which brings me to the Jinnar. This fella' here is Taiossu and he's really the only one to have been of much note. He was put together so early in my character creation process that he had a lot of fan DNA to him. I am relieved that when I found him again, a good deal of that had been exercised. Good. That crap can be so cumbersome and I am glad to have it gone.

They are a tribal people who have been through their technological renaissance, come out the other side and figured they were better off without all of that fancy stuff. If need be, they could activate the ships, weapons, communication equipment and other tech (that would make a better part of the universe drool in envy); but they don't want ... at all. They are not proud of the people they were or the way they lived under the technological influence. And while they will never forget their past, they have lived happily without it for at least thirty generations.

Only one of them has ever left their home world, and he did it for one simple reason: Because his wife could not. She had a fascination with the worlds beyond their own (she was descended from great explorers) but was struck with an illness and was not able to leave the region in which she lived. Seeing how much she wanted to see other places, her mate decided to go for her and to return to her every so often with stories and objects from other worlds. He's the guy pictured here.

In his travels, Taiossu has been everything from a slave to the highest adviser to a king of an empire. And in his hundreds of years abroad, he has sent home the treasures of far-flung worlds and returned to her as often as he could to retell his adventures her and to the people of all the villages who couldn't wait to hear where he had been.

In bringing his story up to date, I learned of the death of his wife. He travels still, but doesn't know when he'll go back, if ever. And here he is in the purple-leaved tree he sent to her when he left on his first trip ... wish I knew what he was thinking.

I know many of you watch me for hot guys or whatever and that I may lose watchers for this one. I hope you can keep an open mind, here. Sometimes I have to stretch my art legs a bit and try something new and different or my art would become stagnant and I would go crazy. In pushing ahead and making new characters in new worlds, it's very important to remember where you've been. I realized that this week when reading about someone's utter frustration with people who have fan characters. We were all there once. I was there, and I will be the first to admit it. Have I moved on? Yes. But as a group of creative individuals here on DA, it's something I think most of us have in common. So acknowledge them. Go back and give them some love. You wouldn't be where you are today without them and the lessons they taught you as you were taking your first steps into true character creation. For that they are just as valuable as a purely created OC (if there really is such a thing).

I'll tell you two secrets:

1. The people who rail and rant the hardest against fan characters (such as I did) are the ones who have one or two tucked away in their hearts somewhere and still hold them dear. It's a prime example of protesting too much. They put up such a fuss because they have something to hide ... and they shouldn't.

2. Digital painting is F**K'IN HARD!!

I should like to review this art in two parts. The first is the background:

I love the colours, the shapes, the greys and the shading you've managed. The tree trunk is well drawn and nicely planned out while the foliage looks like it's really multi layered and containing lots of small things you can't quite see, just the trick for the eye.

I thought the dark brown trunk in the far back was a little too dark, since to my eye it was hard to see it as an object standing on top of the foliage and not simply a gap in the foliage looking out onto a sky of some sort. But looking closer you can see some gnarling so it probably just needs some highlighting and something to push it out more.

The green borders around the foliage are somewhat out of place. I expect you originally had the foliage green and then changed it? A dark purple would work better for the stroke there.

The figure is good. I like the pose, it's natural and believable. And not an easy pose either, it has to touch the background in three places. I also like the colours on the figure, it goes well. There is an issue with missing stroke(lines) on some of the parts and black stroke on yet others still. So the impression is one of incompleteness for that, but looking closely you can see the stroke it's just very light compared to the background.

I think he might need more shadows to more firmly cement his feet to the trunk, at the moment my eye could quite believe he was floating just above the trunk, just a little. That may just be the angle of the light though, so it may not be an issue.

Overall, I really like this art. I normally only critique art I like a lot. Hope this helps e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

Thanks very much! You've found things in it that I did not, so I really appreciate it and it does help as this is one of the first I've tried with this technique. Now I know what to look for and what to work on. (And on all accounts, you are absolutely right! ... especially about the green outline bit.)

I don't think I've ever had such an honest and helpful critique before and I am very glad you like it.

Thanks again!

I don't really understand why you'd lose watchers over this, but oh well. I like this guy's story, and I love his devotion to his wife.Traveling for her, and bringing back everything he can for her to experience. On our side of culture that would seem weird, but for Taiossu, it fits him. To break out of the mold for the love of someone special.
He looks so sad, and I'm quite sad that his wife is gone. And the possibility she may have passed while he was away,is a heartbreaking.

I love the shoes too! Dammit girl, you should design shoes!
Anyhow, the eyes are gorgeous, and the details of the jewelry are tribal and fun.

I don't know if I've ever done any fan characters. I may at one point, back in high school. I know I have a roster of about 40-50 characters I made up on the spot for art class. If I can find them, I'll see what I can do with them!

Some people have a bad reaction to anything they see as too "anthro". I am not sure if that is what Taiossu is, but he's not my garden-variety humanoid, that's for certain.

Here's where I ramble ... you can skip it if you like:

The Jinnar think about marriage in a funny way. They strive to give their spouses their dreams in whatever way possible. He just felt so bad for her and knew that the best way to show he he loved her was to give her, in any way he could, that which the wanted the most: to experience other worlds.
Unfortunately, she did die when he was away. And he found out about it a day or two later because he was *very* far away ... in a different part of the galaxy, no less. But what was most amazing was that it wasn't just Taiossu and the other Jinnar who came for her funeral. People from all over the universe came. Emperors, kings, great generals and all manner of people came to honor her because they knew how dear she was to him. So in a way, he was (in the end), able to bring all these worlds to her. It closed things up fairly well for him. He could put her to rest knowing that she was loved and remembered in all those worlds she could never visit but so wished to see.

If I knew someone who could make them? I'd be all over it.

Thanks very much!

I think it depends on what's written about them and how much effort goes into the character.
You may draw hunky guys, but there is a reason for each one of them...even when they aren't yours you always do such in-depth stuff on them.So an anthro type character from you isn't going to be typical.
What a wonderful thing to happen at her funeral. And the love that made Taissou to do that to make her dreams come true shows true devotion and selflessness. And that all those people knew how much she was loved is heart warming.

Time for a Google search! Or an Etsy search...

You are very very welcome.

I rather like this design, and I am always very pleased to see new and different things from my fave artists.

Taiossu sort of resembles Reg...I think. I love his character design and the pose. I love seeing all the different characters you create and write about, they're always so full of emotion.

NuBearEull In reply to CiiMoore [2011-05-02 04:07:34 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I am just paranoid people will turn their noses up at it because it's too "anthro" ... which isn't what I'd call him. Not sure what to call it, actually.

There is some resemblance there. Only Reg never would have left home. He'd have stayed home, fretted and made Lisa crazy.

I don't understand people...nor do I really try too. At least not that sort of reasoning. It's your art Nuisance, if people are going to get a bee up their ass about a little change, then they can go watch someone else.

I love your style and your work. All of it. <3

LOL poor Reg. I hope nothing ever happens to Lisa. I love her and Reg.<3

I know nothing about digital painting other than I can't do it, so apart from saying that I would have no idea this was an early attempt from how this looks, I am of little help. And of course fan characters help us get where we are today - they are stepping stones. I only ever had two (they were both Sailor Senshi for an RPG I was in) but if I hadn't have had those, no doubt I'd have evolved in a different direction to how I did. Anyway, in this pic the pose looks realistic, and there's tension in the legs which is a hard thing to get done, and the colours are all nicely integrated.

I had more than a few in the past. But they all evolved. I would be embarrassed if their origins ever got out, but am proud of what they became over time.

Woah, Nu, the coloring on this is spectacular! Very different from your usual, much softer and more painterly... but you know, I really dig it! It's especially effective on his clothing, and the fact that you made him more subtly shaded and the background a bit closer to cell-shading in terms of technique was a great idea--makes him "pop" more. Brava!

I like this. It's another example of your thought out characters.
I find it interesting when artists I watch step outside their normal (posted) art. It normally helps them expand their techniques and get the juices flowing. I get to see some neat pictures, which quite often it inspire me too.
(Besides this, I can't help but think that you can do whatever you like for your personal art. If it makes you happy that's the point)
