Fanfic preview: Batman Arkham Asylum: Road to EdenHere's a short preview of my fanfic, feel free to leave your thoughts or criticism. ,Written by HMHdunkirk, edited by batmanreborn8 (batman4life on FFN) PrologueBotanical Glasshouse, Arkham Asylum11:25 A.M.“Anyone else bored? I’m bored.”The tired voice belonged to an escaped inmate during the current Arkham Asylum riots. His face painted in white clown makeup, he was only one of many others who were assigned to patrol the eerie expanse of the greenhouse while untold chaos and calamity ensued outside of the building walls. Also tired of the monotony, one of the Joker’s henchmen laid down on a bench and absentmindedly played with his assault weapon. “I’m bored of listening to you complain, if it makes you feel any better,” another one said.“Can someone remind me why we’re in this creepy ass place again?” the thug sitting down asked.“You forget what Joker said on the intercoms already?” the other goon replied. “The boss said, ‘Head to the garden and don’t let anyone in or out’, so we head to the garden and don’t let anyone in or out. It’s ain’t exactly rocket science.” “Wait, we building a rocket in here?”“No…” The goon gritted his teeth. “It’s a saying, you moron. A figure of speech. Anyways, what the boss says goes. We don’t let anybody in or out.”Not satisfied by the answer, he sat up straight and pressed further, “Who’s coming here anyways, Tony? I thought the Bat already left this place. Guys in Intensive Treatment just said they saw Batman over there. Then they stopped responding to the radio, which probably ain’t too good.” “You questioning the boss again? God, you’ve done nothing but whine ever since we got busted out, Frank.” Tony’s irritated voice filled the dank glasshouse. “Listen, if Joker ever got wind that you were questioning the plan, he’d send Harley down here, and then we’d really be in trouble. Remember what happened to Razor? All alone in that room with all the laughing gas? Well J would do even worse to us. So shut your damn mouth.”“No you shut up,” Frank responded with an almost childish retort. “Y’all just need to chill the hell out,” another inmate named Larry piped up. “We got four guys armed to the teeth in this room, not to mention the other group of badasses at the entrance and a couple of guys in the back ready to come help us out at a moment’s notice.”“What if Batman comes back?” “If Batman is stupid enough to come back…” Pausing, Larry hoisted his rifle up in his calloused hands, miming firing it at an imaginary target as if the caped crusader was in front of him. “Bang. He’s dead.”“Dibs on the mask,” one of them called out.“I want that fancy belt of his, with all those gadgets and stuff,” another one commented. “Ohhh, maybe he’s got keys in there to that cool ass car he drives, too.” Finally, someone else changed the subject. “Anyone got anything to drink? I could totally go for a beer right about now.”Then, some time passed.Drip. Drip. The glasshouse remained silent except for the occasional chatter of the inmates and the dripping sound of water from the fountain in the middle of the glasshouse.“Maybe Tony’s right. This ain’t too bad. At least I don’t have to worry about the boss or the Bat in here,” Frank whispered to himself, not wanting to piss Tony off while lying on the bench. “Hell, it’s smelling good in here. What’s that all about?”As he took a big breath, the ground of the garden suddenly vibrated violently. A sharp, high-pitched wail pierced the air of the Botanical Garden like a knife. Then came a second one, etched in terror before being immediately drowned out by the deafening roar of automatic gunfire exploding from the garden's entrance.“What the hell?” Frank exclaimed, falling off the bench that he was resting on. Tony quickly grabbed the radio and yelled into it, “Entrance Group report in, what the hell is going over there?” “Get the hell away from me!”“No no no no nooo!”“What the hell is that?”Tony got nothing but screams and gunshots from the other side of the radio. “Is it the Bat? God dammit Ricky! Say something!” Tony tried again, only to hear more screams and more gunshots. And then, static. The other inmates, in collective panic, grabbed their weapons and aimed at the door leading to the garden’s entrance. “I thought you said the Bat wasn’t coming back here. What the hell are we gonna do?” Frank yelled, his voice shaking as much as his body. “Keep it together people. There’s four of us, and one of him,” Tony shouted back, trying to retain his authority in this rapidly evolving situation. “That math still don’t work out in our favor!” Larry pointed out. “Get the guys from the back here now! We need all the firepower we can get, man!!”Before Tony could radio for reinforcements, similar sounds of screams and firearms firing came from the back of the Garden as well. The inmates swung their rifles and shotguns in that direction, puzzled. As Frank was about to open his mouth to voice his confusion, the door that led to the deeper area of the garden slammed open. A single Joker goon, unarmed and staggering, emerged from the darkness of the hallway; his face was filled with fear while his lips were coughing out blood.“Ge…get the hell out of here! She’s he-” The thug got dragged back to the darkness by an unknown object before he could complete the sentence. The door seemingly shut by itself. “Oh God!”“You guys just see that?!” “What…what are we going to do now Tony?” Frank stuttered, swinging his rifle back and forth frantically.“Stay calm, you idiot! Here’s the plan: we spread out and FIND the son of a bitch! Got it?” Tony barked. Still puzzled and still afraid, the rest of the thugs complied, nonetheless.Creating a perimeter, they leveled their weapons in all directions. “Show yourself Bat freak. What, you too afraid to fight like a man?!”“Yeah, too scared to show yourself?!”“Show yourself, chicken!!”The inmates taunted and taunted, trying to lure the Dark Knight out…… but Tony sensed something wrong.“Something’s off, everyone report in!” he yelled.“Here!” “All good over here!”All but one inmate replied.“Jones? Jones?” Tony hollered as they tried to locate their fellow inmate.Frank heard the beeping sounds of the heartbeat monitor that they wore, and he followed it. Frank’s eyes widened as he managed to find the source of the sound. “Over here, man down!” he shouted, his voice full of fear. Tony and Larry quickly rushed to Frank’s side and found Jones’s body.“Hey! Wake up, man! C’mon, wake up!” Tony tried to jolt the downed inmate, but there was no response. In his desperation, he tried lifting up the fallen man’s head, but to his horror, the neck was twisted in a way that it should not be twisted.Frank stood up, his face fully flush with panic as he registered this ghastly image. “How are we getting out of here, man?”“Shut the hell up. We need to keep looking or we’re all dead!” Even Tony could not stay calm anymore. The hint of fear in his voice was impossible to conceal.“Let’s stay together, watch others’ backs. Even Batman can’t take out three of us together.” Larry proposed as he wiped the sweat off his face.“Yes, let’s do this. We move together, then we shoot the Bat together. Shoot the hell out of him,” Tony nodded, trying to remain in control of the situation. The armed inmates moved carefully along the wall, keeping their backs against it to limit the directions from which the Caped Crusader could strike at them. Their rifles and shotguns were raised, pointing towards every possible entrance, as they carefully scanned the room for any signs of movement, any movement at-“ARRGGGGHHH!” Larry screamed as something pulled him up toward one of the gargoyles in the glasshouse.Tony and Frank immediately aim their rifles at the gargoyle. “It’s the FREAKIN’ BAT! Fire!”The muzzle flash of the inmates’ rifles lit up the glasshouse. Flashes of rounds flew toward the gargoyle in an accurate volley but there was no one on it. There was only Larry’s body hanging under the grotesque statue. And he wasn’t moving.“Oh God…” Frank stared at the body in shaken disbelief.Tony stepped away from the dangling, dead body slowly. Being his cellmate for two years in Blackgate, Frank had never seen him openly showing such fear and anxiety. “Does that look like Batman’s freakin’ handiwork to you?” Tony quivered.Larry’s face had turned white while showing the agony of his last moment. His neck was snapped by a green rope still coiled around it. Frank rubbed his eye and looked again. “Wait, that’s not a rope. Is that a…vine?” The duo’s feet froze in place, even the cold-blooded Blackgate inmates stunned by this ghastly scene. Unknown to them, the door leading to the deeper area of the garden slowly creaked open. But soon, they each snapped out of their shock.“Screw the Joker! Screw the plan. I’m getting out of here!!” Frank screamed as Tony nodded frantically in agreement. Before they started to move, a projectile flew out from the dark hallway leading to the inner garden. It hit Tony’s back, eating through his jumpsuit and burning his skin instantly. His scream was of pure, unadulterated agony. The projectile paralyzed him in a matter of seconds, his body dropping to the soil like a ragdoll. He lay on the ground motionlessly while his grimacing face was the only sign that indicated he was still alive- albeit alive and in great suffering.Frank turned his head and looked at his cellmate helplessly. He had no choice but to drop his weapon and run.And so he ran for his life. “Come on, come on come on…” Faster and faster. The moment he reached the door leading to the garden’s entrance area, he felt a great pain in his spine. Greater than any pain he’d ever felt before. Then he watched a thorned vine piercing out of his stomach. It had just punctured a vital organ. Or several. His body limply dropped toward the ground as the vine pulled itself out of the inmate’s body. Bleeding profusely on the ground, the Joker’s henchman tasted the salty crimson trickling down his lips.As he slowly and painfully led to death in the greenhouse of Arkham Asylum, his world faded to black. The last thing Frank Carter saw was a woman’s silhouette, and then darkness.
